Juneau - Governor Frank Murkowski announced Friday that the Alaska Division of Motor Vehicles would make the popular veterans' license plates available to motorcycles. Previously the plates were available to automobiles only.

"Special license plates, designed exclusively for use on vehicles owned by veterans, were created several years ago," said Murkowski. "We have determined motorcycles should be included in the definition of vehicles' owned by veterans. Beginning immediately, the DMV will accept orders for veteran license plates for motorcycle use."

In conjunction with the new plates, the Alaska DMV has reconfigured the location of the military branch insignia to allow the plate to be "personalized" on both full size plates and motorcycle plates. Additionally, the designs have expanded the branch insignia to include a limited number of logos representing unit designations.

The director of Alaska's Division of Motor Vehicles, Duane Bannock, was pleased to announce that the many veterans who ride motorcycles will get to display their colors proudly. "It is our opinion that many of Alaska's motorcycle drivers are veterans who deserve this option of proudly displaying their service to their country," said Bannock. "The DMV is pleased to be a small part in that display."

Visit the DMV website www.state.ak.us/dmv/ for more information or contact the Division of Motor Vehicles at (907) 269-5559.
