State Gaming:
Too Much of a Gamble or a Good Way to Raise State Dollars
Labor & Commerce Committee
to Meet October 1st
September 27, 2003
Saturday - 12:30 am
Some say State gaming may very well be part of the answer to
bridging the State's fiscal gap. Others say the social consequences
outweigh any benefits. The Senate Labor and Commerce Committee
will review the issue, Wednesday October 1st , from 11:00-6:00p.m.
The Committee will spend time listening to public testimony regarding
SB
178 and SB
186, both introduced by Sen. Robin Taylor (R-Wrangell) during
last year's Legislative session.
SB 178 establishes a State
lottery and The Alaska State Lottery Corp., a five-member board
appointed by the Governor to manage lottery affairs and generate
State revenue. SB 186 authorizes charitable gaming permits for
electronic gaming in places restricted to those 21 years old
and older. The hearing will be teleconferenced Statewide and
members welcome public testimony from all parties interested
or involved with gaming in the State of Alaska.
