Thank You for Trash Cleanup
by Jerry Cegelske
September 28, 2004
Tuesday
I would like to thank Big Brothers and Big Sisters, Ketchikan
Youth Court, Gretchen Klein and others that participated
in the trash cleanup on North Tongass this weekend. Even
though they have not signed up for a section of the highway,
they have taken the time to clean up one of the dirtiest,
most littered sections of road in Ketchikan. This is not
the first time many of them have done so.
On my drive in on Monday, I observed trash bags, yellow, black,
and white along with piles of trash that could not be put in
a bag for over a mile. At about 9:30 I went out to photograph
them for Sitnews and they had already been picked up by Nick
Farstad and his crew from the State Highways Department.
The ditches looked great!
If you get a chance, take the time to thank them for their efforts.
If it weren't for them and many others like them, the Society
of American Foresters, the Boy Scouts, and others, imagine what
the ditches around Ketchikan would look like. They are
donating a rare and precious comodity to the residents of the
Borough, their TIME, as well as their physical efforts in order
to correct a problem that many refuse to take responsibility
for, their trash. Along with their selfless efforts, they
are also risking their well being in their exposure to traffic
along the road.
I am sure they would encourage other groups and residents to
take the time to get involved in cleaning up the community, you
don't have to wait for clean-up days to do it. Just get
a bag and start!
To everyone that has helped in cleaning up trash in the Borough "THANKS"!
Your efforts are applauded and appreciated.
