Kane Named KGH Employee of the Month

Ketchikan, Alaska - Sister Betty Kane, Director of Pastoral Care at Ketchikan General Hospital (KGH), has been named Employee of the Month by a committee of her peers.

Sister Betty Kane was born in Dublin, Ireland. She entered the Sisters of St. Joseph of Peace in Newry, County Down, Ireland.  Later she came as a Sister to Bellingham, Washington and went on to a teaching career, which took her to areas along the coast of Washington and into Nelson, British Columbia.

In addition, she spent five years with the Maryknoll Community in Chile, South America where she worked on many projects with the poor.

Following her time in Chile, she pursued chaplaincy training in Sacramento, California, and subsequently worked as a chaplain in Laredo, Texas and Yakima, Washington.

"As chaplain I find the fulfillment of my calling as a Sister.  Here I minister to people at a most vulnerable time of their lives.  My hope and intention is that the patient will recognize my efforts as representing a loving, caring God reaching to them in their time of suffering," she stated. "It is a joy to work in an environment in which my values are aligned with those of the health care system and where I share with all others our efforts in bring healing to body, mind and spirit."

The award of Employee of the Month at KGH recognizes those who regularly go above and beyond what is required, to provide high quality service to patients, visitors and co-workers.
