Stop Schoencliff
By John Beck

This is a reply to the letter dated 9/4 from Pete Ellis. One of the problems with the proposed 1/2 percent sales tax is that it will never go away even when the bonds are paid off. Pass the tax and then work to have it spent correctly? How foolish. I don't see how that will work at all. One of the goals of the Borough Assembly is to generate monies for the general operating fund to then be used at their discretion after the bonds are paid off.

The sales tax by law will have to be used to pay off the bonds for the Schoencliff project, then it will go to the General Fund and will be in place long after both you and I pass from this world.

Oh, one more little tidbit of information. This Schoencliff project is "For the Seniors." Fact: only 5% of the seniors on this island use the current Seniors Center.

How about building a center for 50 year old men who can't seem to catch many fish. Hey, we can't spend 20 to 30 million on such a small number of people you say! At least I would use it.

I have much to say on this subject and I will end my rant for now.

Thanks,

John Beck
