Crab
By Jeff Kemp

In regard to Mr. Beck's letter today ... we too in the Juneau area have experienced fewer numbers and smaller male Dungeness crab in recent years. Funter Bay is all but fished out as is Swanson Harbor. Taku Harbor and Windham Bay are other examples of poor Dungeness numbers.

A few years ago local sport fishers in the Juneau area appealed to the Board of Fish and Game to eliminate commercial crabbing in Funter Bay to no avail. Eventually, the Dungeness will reach the same situation the King crab did the past few years: no open season so that stocks can be rebuilt. It's pathetic but that's the way the Dept. of Fish and Game operate and, maybe more specific, the Board of Fish and Game.
