By Linda Koons Auger

Tuesday
Congratulations to our commercial fishing fleet and processors
for the Port of Ketchikan's ranking of #15 in Landings &
18th in Values. (See, Sit News
September 03, 2010 issue of the Fish Factor By LAINE WELCH.) With Ketchikan's early beginnings
at the base of Ketchikan Creek, it should be evident, now more
than ever, that this industry is essential for the economic well-being
of our community. It's long-term viability is possible (in part)
by to the State's Constitutional mandate to manage Alaska's fisheries
for sustainability. With increasing demand for wild Alaska seafood
in the marketplace comes the opportunity for growth. To our benefit,
some of our local processors currently staff and operate year-round.
The continued success of commercial fishing, timber, the Ketchikan
Shipyard. tourism and other local business ventures is vital
in reaching and sustaining a stable economy. New businesses ventures
requiring fiber optics capabilities to [insert your business
idea here] add to business diversification. With the stressed
economy here and nationwide, I firmly believe that it is vital
that year-round industries be identified and further cultivated
sooner rather than later.
My closing, a thought to ponder on this Labor Day weekend: Let's
get America working again, starting right here in our community
of Ketchikan!
