Re-elect Senator Begich By Michael Baines September 15, 2014
As a lifelong Alaskan with experience in many Alaskan fisheries - including personal and charter sport fishing, hand and power trolling, seining, gill netting, subsistence salmon and halibut fishing, commercial halibut fishing, factory long lining, and crabbing, I am appalled by GOP senate candidate Dan Sullivan's complete lack of respect for Alaska's largest industry. Now there really shouldn’t be any doubt in any Alaskans’ mind that Dan Sullivan is not fit to represent Alaska in the Senate. That’s because this week, he announced he is “too busy travelling” to attend the Kodiak Chamber of Commerce’s fisheries debate. I don’t have to tell you (but apparently I have to tell Sullivan): this state revolves around the fishing industry – it’s how we sustain ourselves, literally and figuratively. Alaska exports more fish than any other product, and the fishing industry is Alaska’s largest private sector employer. I know Sullivan hasn’t lived in Alaska very long, but you’d think he’d at least do his homework on Alaska before running for the Senate. If he had, he would have known that skipping this debate is simply not done. At least not by anyone who actually hopes to win an election. Whether you are a Democrat or Republican, I think we can all agree that Alaska absolutely cannot elect someone who can’t even make the time to talk about how he plans to fight for this industry as the state’s U.S. Senator. Luckily, we have the choice to re-elect Senator Begich, who has consistently fought for the fishing industry – getting real results for this state.
