THE CLUELESS CANDIDACY OF LESLIE BECKER

By David G Hanger

I am sure by now most of you have seen all the signs around town announcing the candidacy of Leslie Becker for state representative. They are quite prolific. So I posed the question to one of our local elected officials, “Who the hell is Leslie Becker?” The response was, “She is a dangerous extreme right wing religious kook,” absolutely no hesitation in the response. I was a bit surprised by the adamancy.

Dan Ortiz has been around long enough everyone has something of a bitch with Dan Ortiz, but let me make a simple point: Dan Ortiz is one of us, and this gal ain’t. Her pretenses at expertise in this regard are particularly clueless.

My review of her materials indicates beyond any question our local elected official is spot on about this individual. She is basically a theocratic fascist, and that is her only real political interest. Everything else she says is just dumb.

Becker lists her platform of concerns, in her sequence, as: 1) Life; 2) Justice; 3) Development; 4) Budget; and 5) Education. You can discard all but the first because she has nothing consequential to say about her last four categories. Indeed, she does not indicate that she comprehends anything in any of her own chosen last four categories of concern.

About “Life” she says her concern is “from conception to natural death” as “is required in moral law.” Is there a feminine for “ayatollah?” Moral law is what preachers talk about as they are playing tinhorn politician with you, trying to compel you to conform to a set of behavioral standards manufactured for you by them. “From conception” means this woman wants to crawl into bed with you before you have disengaged from coitus, at which point she and her moral law are in charge of everything you do henceforth.

State representatives in Alabama and in Texas have recently presented, multiple times, legislative proposals that imprison a woman for life if she has an abortion, and in Texas calls for the death penalty.

That is the cloth from whence this woman cometh; an intolerant religious fascist fully intent on imposing her religious beliefs on you, and if you disobey her moral law, great punishment will be your reward here and hereafter.

If you are a nut job who does not believe in secular law, you have the perfect candidate in Leslie Becker. She will smite all the sinners she perceives hip and thigh, no real doubt about that.

In her category about “Justice” she does nothing but talk about Permanent Fund Dividends, complaining we are not getting what we were supposed to get. That has nothing to do with “Justice.”

For “Development” she presents us with a series of platitudes about fishing, timber, and mining, which informs us quite emphatically that she is a short-timer who has no clue about the economic history of this region; nor does she apparently have a desire to have a clue. She closes by claiming to support the ferry system again with nothing but platitudes and nonsensical observations. She does not understand that privatization is nuts, trying to make a highway system profitable is nuts, and that financing for the ferry system requires continued government subsidy. (How much do you pay to drive down the highways down south, knuckleheads? Each mile of interstate costs millions before the maintenance; the toll you pay is in the taxes you pay, just like it should be with the ferry system.)

For “Budget” she has no proposal at all, but somehow without taxing the oil companies she thinks she is going to get us maximum Permanent Fund Dividends. Here she is just a Dunleavy clone, and I saw all you local registered Republicans signing the petition to recall the SOB when I was up there signing, too.

For “Education” she emphasizes that all the locals are dummies who can’t keep up with national testing standards, but has no solutions at all beyond gibberish.

She is a doctor’s wife, looking to become the “Doktor’s Frau,” as she manages your sexual behavior and your rearing of your children. She is the worst thing possible that one can bring to secular law, a religious obsessive who seeks to impose her religious standards on you while claiming that she alone could possibly be in compliance with “moral law.” (All of which by the way has no standing in secular law at all.)

Leslie Becker is not concerned about the problems of this community or of this region. She is concerned about what you are doing in your bedroom. She has no interest in taxing the oil companies to save this state. (Nothing else will, by the way.) She just wants to stick her nose in your private business.

Dan Ortiz is not perfect; I am sure even he will tell you that. Don’t forget I used to call him Oilcan Dan. He never stopped talking to me. I think he heard what I was saying, and gets it. But Dan is a panhandle politician in a state where the panhandle does not count, so he could be a noisemaker and a gadfly complaining about reality, and getting nothing done; or he could attempt to form rational coalitions which benefit his constituency somewhat because still he is pushing uphill. That is what he has done.

I think that is a whole lot better than what the “Doktor’s Frau” wants to bring to the table.

“Pothole National Park” has cost me money for maintenance, etc. Lots of other stuff is not getting done. Appreciate, however, very little of this can our state representative influence directly. What Dan Ortiz is trying to cobble together with others is a conditional means to finance state government (which, frankly, is destined to fail) that tries to deal with the reality that a bunch of corrupt Republican politicians in the Anchorage/Fairbanks corridor are owned by the oil companies, and refuse to tax or collect royalties on the oil that belongs to all of the people of this state. Leslie Becker will simply crawl into bed with those people.

Dan Ortiz works for us. Vote for Dan.
