The Jewel in the Rock
By Bridgit Stearns

Tuesday
Embedded in our island community there is a jewel, our Public Library. It holds a rich and valuable trove of materials that are available to everyone who lives in the Borough, whether town or “out the road”, north or south. Library staff are another part of its treasure. They are a dedicated group who have the knowledge and expertise to maintain and refresh the collection, to help library users find needed materials, to troubleshoot computer problems, develop a busy schedule of programming for all ages, to provide library service to the homebound, and to help instill a love of reading in the youngest users. They make the library a place that is welcoming to all.
Over the decades Borough taxpayers have done their part to keep this jewel shining bright. We have provided funds to pay building costs, staff salaries, and the purchase of equipment and materials. We together have built an institution that is, in my opinion, second to none. I urge voters outside the city limits to think about the benefits an intact Public Library gives our community, especially to our children. Vote NO on Proposition 2 on Oct 4. Do not cripple a resource that does so much for so many of our citizens. We are all the keepers of this jewel.
