Where to put students next year
by Dave Lieben

Hello everyone!

Keith Smith and I had a chance to visit White Cliff students at Kayhi, Assembly of God Church, and Pioneer Home on Friday, it appears that the teachers, parents, and students are doing a great job making the best of a difficult situation.

By fall 2005, IF current projections hold, Schoenbar will be open again, and Fawn Mountain will be coming along but still not completed. While a decision doesn't need to be made for a while, it's not too early to start thinking about where the school district should locate our students next school year.

Two of the ideas that have been brought up so far are:

  • Leave the 8th grade in Kayhi; move the 6th and 7th graders into Schoenbar; disperse the PK-5th grade from White Cliff into Houghtaling and Point Higgins.
  • Leave the 8th grade in Kayhi; move the students from White Cliff along with the 7th graders into Schoenbar.

If you have ideas, concerns, comments, or questions you can e-mail me dlieben@yahoo.com and I will forward them to Superintendent Martin, or you can e-mail him martinh@kgbsd.org directly. We will probably be having a public meeting on the subject at some point.

Also, I'd like to encourage everyone to get out and vote on Tuesday, and hopefully bring your children with you, so they can see how important it is to make your voice heard. The tie vote for the Borough Assembly race last year shows how much impact one vote can have. I hope you will vote for the candidates who will fight for our children, whether for quality eduction, affordable health care, or safer streets.

Thanks,
