1. Governor Murkowski prioritized
fisheries in his administration by appointing a knowledgeable
fisheries advisor and working with his fisheries advisor to remain
abreast of fisheries issues.
2. Governor Murkowski, by personal
involvement, ensured that knowledgeable and qualified individuals
were appointed to key positions in ADF&G, Alaska Board of
Fisheries and the North Pacific Fisheries Management Council.
3. Governor Murkowski accumulated
and distributed in excess of $50,000,000 to energize the recovery
of the Alaska salmon industry.
4. Governor Murkowski initiated
efforts to expand world markets for Alaska seafood by personally
traveling to Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Japan.
5. Governor Murkowski steadfastly
defended Alaska's position opposing salmon farming in State waters
and salmon ranching in Federal waters.
6. Governor Murkowski endorsed
legislation reorganizing the Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute
and enabled ASMI to focus new marketing initiatives on domestic
marketing of frozen and canned Alaska seafood.
7. Governor Murkowski championed
inclusion of Alaska fishermen in Department of Agriculture commodity
purchase and assistance programs.
8. Governor Murkowski authorized
legislation providing funding for qualified Gulf of Alaska communities
to purchase halibut and sablefish quota shares.
