Juneau, Alaska - In response to questions received from the public, the Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) has posted factual information on black bear baiting to its website. The information is in the form of frequently asked questions and is easily accessible via the Internet.

ADF&G is posting this information in preparation for the November election, when voters will consider an initiative that seeks to prohibit the hunting of black bears over bait statewide in Alaska.

"Because we have had so many requests for information on the matter, we have decided to post the information on our website, where it will be easily accessible," said Matthew Robus, Director of ADF&G's Division of Wildlife Conservation. "As managers of the state's wildlife populations, we are in a unique position to provide the public with factual information regarding the hunting of black bears over bait in the State of Alaska. I hope that Alaskans will visit our website and make informed decisions on the matter."

The website includes information (click here) on the use of bait to take black bears, state regulations controlling the technique, nuisance bears, and the impact of baiting on bear harvests.
