Ketchikan, Alaska - This week in Ketchikan the community is invited to an Open House at the library from 5:30-8:00pm on Tuesday, October 30th. 'Within the Ice' Opening Reception. The Mainstay Gallery opens a new show of work by Micheal Francis Kelly, an artist from Fairbanks who creates compelling black and white photographs of ice formations. The opening reception will be at 5:30pm on Friday, November 2nd at 716 Totem Way, and is open to the public. Refreshments will be served. Call 225-2211 for more information.

Mushrooms, Fungus, and Fun! If you have been in the forest lately you might have noticed that it's mushroom season again. "Mushroom-Hunter" Leif Sivertsen will share mushroom basics including identification techniques, resources, and hunting tips on Friday, November 2nd, From 7-8:00 pm at the Southeast Alaska Discovery Center. Bearfoot Bluegrass tickets on sale NOW! KAAHC Torch Nights performing arts series presents Bearfoot on Friday, November 16th. Beauty and the Beast. First City Players will perform the classic musical of the beautiful Belle and the enchanted Beast who must learn to love. Ketchikan Opera Scholarship. Lessons a' Lallette presents the first annual Ketchikan Opera Scholarship. Male and female contestants, ages 13 to Adult are encouraged to apply for up to 6 months of free lessons. Awards may be split between two deserving contestants who are willing to commit to a practice regimen and weekly rehearsals with the Community Chorus to study the techniques needed for singing opera and other difficult repertoire. Speakeasy: A Monthly Event at Parnassus Books. This is an opportunity to read aloud your own work, or a passage, poem or story written by your favorite author. Join us at Parnassus the last Friday night of each month at 7pm for music by the Rainy Day Recorders. The October SpeakEasy at Parnassus will feature the works of MJ Turek: poems, narratives, stories. Readings will begin at 7:30pm, refreshments will be served. The Alaska State Museum seeks Solo Exhibition Submissions. The Alaska State Museum in Juneau is accepting applications from Alaskan artists for solo exhibitions. Artists must send in slides or a CD of images, an exhibit proposal, and a completed application form by November 30, 2007. This opportunity is open to all resident Alaska visual artists working in any media who have not had a solo exhibition at the Alaska State Museum in the past six years. The Anchorage Museum seeks Submissions. The Anchorage Museum at Rasmuson Center seeks artist submissions for the All Alaska Juried Show XXXII. Prospectus available November 15th, Deadline for digital entries is January 1st, 2008, Notification will be on February 1st, 2008, and Deadline for submission of artwork is February 26th, 2008. Seeking Artists, Writers, and Poets for UAS's Tidal Echoes. UAS seeks submissions for a literary and arts journal published in April 2008. Global Art Project for Peace, 8th Biennial Exchange. Create a work of art expressing your vision of global peace and goodwill to exchange with another person or group. Works are displayed in the hometown of each participant both before and after exchange. This is a great experience for classrooms as well as individuals. Registration deadline is February 29th, 2008, and the exchange lasts from March-April 2008. 1st Ever Art to Wear Fashion Show: From Tip to Toe. Curators Jean Bartos and Jackie Keizer invite designers creating art to wear in any media to submit an application for participation. Art to wear entries may include garments, jewelry and accessories such as hats, scarves, shoes, belts, handbags, or other imaginative accents. Completed entry forms must be received at the Mainstay Gallery Friday March 14, 2008 by 5pm. The Fashion Show will take place at the Plaza Mall from 6-8pm, Saturday, April 26, 2008. Works from the Fashion Show will also be displayed at the Mainstay Gallery for the May exhibit. An opening reception will be held at the gallery from 5-8pm, Friday, May 2, 2008. Rotary International Youth Exchange. Study overseas at a partner high school for one year as part of an international youth exchange. Open to students ages 14-16, all living expenses paid while you live in the home and experience the culture of a fellow participant from another country. Ongoing attractions:

First City, The Life and Times of Ketchikan is running through November 18th, 2007 at the Tongass Historical Museum, located at 629 Dock Street. Come see artifacts and learn history from our city's earliest days. For more information, call 225-5600.

Monthly Grind at the Tribal House. The Monthly Grind provides a chance for us to enjoy local talent at a friendly venue every third Saturday at 7pm, September through May. Storyhour at the Library continues regularly throughout the year on Thursday and Friday at 10:30am. After some playtime, the librarian reads stories, sings songs, does finger plays and shows a short film beginning around 10:40 am. Different story themes each week! "High Seas Trawling in the Bering Sea: Soviet and Japanese Fishing in Alaska." Join Mark Jaqua as he recounts his time spent on the Bering Sea during 5 tours as a Foreign Fisheries Observer on Friday, November 9th at 7:00pm at the Discovery Center. "Photographing Wildflowers of Alaska, the Yukon, and British Columbia." Local Photographer MJ Cadle is WILD about flowers! Mary Jane will feature a slideshow of flowers she photographed in Southeast Alaska and surrounding northern areas on Friday, November 16th at 7:00pm at the Discovery Center. She will discuss equipment and techniques for capturing close up photos in adverse conditions. She will be on hand to sign her new 2008 calendar. For more information, call 228-6220.

2007 Winter Arts Faire Booth Registration: Pre-registration for 2006 booth holders begins September 17th, while open registration begins Wednesday, October 17th. The final deadline for booth registration is Friday, November 16th. The Winter Arts Faire features local and regional quality, original hand-crafted items and delicious homemade foods. The Winter Arts Faire will take place at the Ted Ferry Civic Center Friday, Nov 23rd from 1 ­ 7pm and Saturday, Nov. 24th from 10am ­ 1pm. Yarn Bee at the Library. People who create with yarn are invited to a monthly "Yarn Bee" the last Sunday of the month (November 25th) from 1-3pm. Each session will begin with a short presentation about new knitting, crochet and craft books at the library then participants will be free to socialize and work on their projects. "Nobody is Perfect, Sweet William." Have you ever wondered how the fanciful melodrama the "Fish Pirate's Daughter" got started? Find out on Friday, November 30th at the Discovery Center. A Tradition of Service: The History of KPU. The fascinating story of Ketchikan Public Utilities, including achievements, disasters, and workaday activities of KPU employees, will be told in a new exhibit at the Tongass Historical Museum. Ketchikan Theatre Ballet presents The Nutcracker. This year's performance of the classic winter ballet will be Dec. 7th at 7:30pm and Dec. 8th at 2:00pm at the Ketchikan High School Auditorium. Bead, Knit, Read, Snooze Cruise. Join a group of beaders and knitters for a round-trip winter cruise aboard the Alaska Marine Highway's MV Malaspina.
