Ortiz Files Intent to Run for State House
October 01, 2013
Ortiz will run as a non-partisan independent candidate. Ortiz said, "I'm excited to run for State House and to possibly get the chance to represent the communities of Southern Southeast, Alaska in a non-paritsan fashion." He said, "I have the skills, knowledge, and desire to work effectively for the interests of the good people of Ketchikan, Wrangell, Metlakatla, and Hydaburg." Ortiz said he understands how economic development happens and if he is elected, he will provide sensible and balanced leadership to make that happen. Ortiz said, "As a 44 year resident, and 30 year teacher and coach in Ketchikan, I have developed connections within the industrial, fishing, and tourist communities and I will listen closely to representatives from those communities for ideas on how the state of Alaska can assist in making economic growth happen in Southern Southeast." Specifically Ortiz sees continued work at the legislative level in developing affordable power and transportation infrastructure as essential in the developing the region's economy. While most of Ortiz's working career has been in Education, he also has worked in the Timber (Ketchikan Pulp Co.), Tourist, and Fishing industries. Glen Thompson, three term Assembly member for the Ketchikan Gateway Borough, filed a Letter of Intent in September with the Alaska Public Offices Commission and annouced he will be a candidate in the 2014 State Primary election for the State House of Representatives. The 2014 State Primary election will take place on August 19, 2014.
