Protect and serve

To specifically address who the police "protect and serve", the answer is "no individual". Their duty is to the community as a whole, as they interpret their instructions. Get online and search; you will find that the courts have ruled, repeatedly, that police are not required to assist any individual.

The worst case I recall involved some women who called 911 several times as they listened to their housemate downstairs being raped and beaten. A police cruiser swung by the parking lot a couple of times, and left. The rapist eventually found the women where they they were hiding.

The survivors and next of kin sued, and the case was thrown out of court. The police do NOT have a duty to protect individuals who are not under arrest, anyone not under arrest is supposed to protect himself (or herself).

And people wonder why I regard concealed carry a civil rights issue?
