The Humpty Dumpty Government Shutdown By J. Leo Baldwin October 07, 2013
What need have we of bi-partisan systems if this is what it produces? Let's look at party motives: fear and greed or love, caring and compassion? Are we afraid of the fictitious threat that without a party system we would be easily overtaken by evil foreigners who want to hurt us. What? That's absurd. It may have been true in the 1700's or before telecommunications but not now. Can we just outlaw all party systems? Have one party the 'people party' - the one that's so fed up it doesn't even vote. What would change with a no party system no need for expensive primaries!! Wow! Other countries don't have them. Let's just outlaw campaigning too, and give each candidate equal tax dollars to bring their message and give them equal time. Cancel retirements and limit all incumbents to two terms. Today, campaigning dictates a sad way of life even for candidates. Large sums of money are raised for tv, radio and newspaper advertising, posters, signs, buttons, even stickers most of it is just litter after election day. Today, big bucks are put in the hands of the media. They turn around and put big bucks into pro bowl teams, to colleges and promoters for exclusive broadcast rights. That's why a pro baseball player makes millions and a school teacher peanuts. Why are coaches better paid than anyone else? Why are prisons overcrowded? Why do one percent of the people own multi-billions! One word. Vote. Unicameral (one legislative house) could be the answer. It works in Nebraska. Has the two party system given us the big Humpty Dumpty Egg? Risking collapse of worldwide economies? Reckless! J.
