(SitNews) - Residents of Southeast Alaska should continue to be diligent about securing garbage, livestock, pet food and other attractants because bears are now hungrier than ever as they prepare for hibernation. The Alaska Department of Fish and Game’s Division of Wildlife Conservation continues to get reports of bears in urban areas.

Fall is a key time for bears. They enter into a state called hyperphagia, in which they are exceptionally hungry as they work toward packing on the final layers of fat before hibernation.

In a typical year, bears have access to a diverse array of natural foods such as berries and salmon. However, when berry crops and salmon returns are low, bears look for food elsewhere. In these situations, bears tend to spend more time in and around communities looking for food.
