Statewide essay contest in conjunction with the Alaska Conference of Mayors November 18, 2003
The contest is designed to give sixth graders students an opportunity to use their knowledge and experience to creatively voice their views on what their generation perceives as the needs of their municipalities. By engaging the leaders of tomorrow, the Alaska Conference of Mayors hopes to spark a lasting interest in civic participation in communities around the state. The essay contest is open to all Alaska students currently enrolled in the 6th grade or being home schooled at the 6th grade level for the 2003-04 school year. Each essay must address the subject with the opening line beginning "If I Were Mayor, I Would..." essays may not exceed 250 words, must be received by the Alaska Municipal League (AML)/Alaska Conference of Mayors (ACoM ) no later than Wednesday, December 17, 2003, at 5:30 pm and must include the student's name and address, school's name and address, and the name of the teacher or guardian assisting the student with their essay. Essays will by judged by a group of Mayors using the following criteria: creativity, clarity, sincerity of thought, proper use of grammar and subject relevancy. Each student who writes an essay will receive a certificate of participation. The three (3) contest winners will receive U.S. Savings Bonds and will be honored during the Winter AML Board of Directors and ACoM Meeting scheduled for January 19th-21st, 2004, in Juneau.
