The New War Between the States

The official name of the dam and lake north of Augusta, Ga., mentioned in Bob Ciminel's humorous story entitled "The New War Between the States," is the J. Strom Thurmond Dam and Lake at Clarks Hill.

The name has been changed twice. Originally named the Clark Hill Dam, Congress later realized they had made a typo in the original law and changed the name to Clarks Hill Dam. Later, Congress again changed the name to the one it now has, to honor the South Carolina senator and maintain its tie to the orginal name.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the project. The Savannah District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will conclude our year-long celebration in December when we bury a large time capsule in a park just below the dam.
