Alaska Clean Water Initiative?
By Dan Kelly

Friday AM
As I was heading in the post office today, I was stopped by a
nice young lady that asked me if I wanted to sign her petition
to "protect our waters" and "save our salmon".
My initial response was that of course I did but I would sign
on the way out.
While I was in line, I remembered reading about an initiative
directed at the mining industry and how a group opposed to the
Pebble Mine was using it to effectively stop all mining in Alaska.
As I left the post office, I asked her if this was that initiative.
She responded that it was directed at the Pebble Mine but that
it would not affect any "small mines" only "the
big ones". I asked another guy signing the petition if he
knew what it was for and he just shrugged.
It reminded me how easy it is to sell fear.
After taking the time to look over the information, I am glad
I did not sign this petition.
I wonder how many of the busy folks running in and out of the
post office and stores really know what they signed today and
how it could affect responsible resource development in Alaska.
