Ketchikan Driving
By A.M. Johnson

Thursday PM
In response to Rodney Dial's fine response to Ketchikan driving suggestions, I would like to contribute. Often while visiting our boat moorage behind the VFW lodge, one will find at high traffic conditions the frustration of awaiting departing cars at the exit attempting to make a left hand turn North. Over time one will have discovered that time and frustrations can be eliminated if the driver will turn RIGHT with the traffic and motor down to the KPU or Third Ave. to Alaska Car Rental. Make a U-turn and head North. You will find this move is a better use of time and traffic flow of those behind you waiting to access Tongass from the harbor parking.
Another traffic suggestion is to employ the multi-number of Ketchikan Police cars. As you drive through town you will note a high number of police cars maintaining the peace during the daylight hours. Perhaps a schedule of having a patrol car depart Tatsuda's parking lot at say, a five minute intervals starting at 3 PM each day traveling North at a traffic speed keeping a say, three or four car gap from traffic ahead which would allow for pedestrian crossing at both legal and convenient crossings and allow side traffic to enter the traffic flow (as long as the incoming traffic with the flow).
The North bound patrol car then would exit at the ferry terminal to be followed soon after till 6 PM.
The last bazaar suggestion for cross walker issues is to pave or paint the streets white and cross walks black as pedestrians seem incline to cross in the black of the street.
Regards,
