Alaska's Hummingbird Festival in its 11th year is celebrating the return of migratory birds to Alaska. Events will be held all throughout the month of April, including the Juried Art Show reception, beading classes with Nancy Tietje plus many more activities. The Senate Finance Committee will meet to discuss HB365 - "An Act making appropriations for the operating and loan program expenses of state government, for certain programs, and to capitalize funds; making appropriations for state aid to public schools, centralized correspondence study, and transportation of pupils; and providing for an effective date."

Musings: the Soul of Landscape on display April 7th - 28th, featuring work by local artist James Mix at the Mainstay Gallery, 716 Totem Way. James works mostly with acrylic paint with some watercolor and oil mixed in, and highlights the natural world as interpreted by the artist. The Mainstay Gallery is sponsored by the Ketchikan Area Arts and Humanities Council. Call 225-2211 for more information.

1:30pm - Legislation relating to HCR38 will be the subject of a teleconference , sponsored by House Transportation Committee, at the Legislative Information Office, 50 Front Street, Suite 203. Testimony will be allowed with a 2 minute time limit.

HCR38 ­"Urging the Department of Transportation and Public Facilities to use the Alaska marine highway system fast ferries efficiently by deploying the fast ferries in northern Lynn Canal and Prince William Sound beginning in the summer of 2006, and to provide data regularly to the affected communities to enable the communities to evaluate the service effectively."

7-8 pm - Friday Night Insight Programs scheduled this weekend at the SE Alaska Discovery Center - Invasive Plants in Ketchikan: Nip them in the bud! Pam Fletcher, Invasive Species Coordinator for the Tongass National Forest will discuss the invasive species found in Ketchikan.

Her books include "The Eye of the Needle," "There was an old Lady Who Swallowed a Trout" and "Dance on a Sealskin." Ketchikan Community Concert Band in concert presents Man in the Ice by Otto M. Schwarz, on Friday, May 5th at 7:30pm in the Kayhi Auditorium. Our Town: The Life and Times of Ketchikan opens May 5, 2006 with a reception from 5-7pm at the Tongass Historical Museum. This exhibit will be on display through September 30, 2006. Call the museum for more information, 225-5600.

Opening Reception for UAS art students on May 5th from 5-8pm at the Mainstay Gallery. Art students and teachers from the UAS Ketchikan Campus will be showing work from their classes. Saturday Market is a Celebration of the Sea on May 6th. This market is themed as a Marine Swap, bring your old stuff and swap it for "new" stuff. It's a flea market for all you boaters! Saturday, May 6th from 9am - 2pm. For booth information call 225-7000.

Ketchikan Community Chorus in concert May 6th and 7th at the Presbyterian Church, 2711 2nd Ave. "Of Words and Music" is a belated celebration of National poetry month featuring "Frostiana", the poetry of Robert Frost set to music by Randall Thompson and involves both the full chorus as well as smaller vocal groupings. Saturday, 7:30 PM, and Sunday, 3:00 PM, tickets $13 adults, $10 students K-12 and seniors Available at KAAHC, McPherson Music and at the door.
