Matthew MerrillCandidate for Ketchikan Borough Assembly
|
My name is Matthew Merrill and I am running for Borough Assembly. I believe in the United States of America and in the constitution. I believe that despite our differences we need to come together to make a better and brighter future for the Borough and Ketchikan.
I do not have any prior political experience, but I do not believe it is necessary to effect change or make things happen. I may not have all the answers to the problems or issues we are facing, but together we can work to find solutions best suited for our community.
As we move forward we need to have a stable economy. My goal is to get the 2021 tourism season back on track as that has affected many members of the borough and city, including myself. We have other resources here in the Borough that need to be explored and encouraged to grow. Infrastructure for logging needs to be looked at. The fishing industry management needs to be updated. With commercial bycatch being a large issue on depleting this resource. Other candidates have similar feelings on expanding our economic industries. I’m excited to hopefully get the chance to work with them on this issue, to ensure we have a bright and lively economic future.
President John F. Kennedy said “Every Accomplishment starts with the decision to try.” We May not agree on everything, or anything. I do feel that we can see through our differences and can accomplish great things. That’s who we are as Alaskans. To work together when we need to. I’m willing to try, so we can accomplish much.
