About First City Homeless Services Our mission is, "To offer the homeless access to a safe, non-judgmental shelter and referrals to local resources." How Pick.Click.Give. makes a difference No other agency in Ketchikan provides daytime shelter for this vulnerable population. The evidence of the need for this shelter is in the numbers of homeless served. 2016 statistics of consumers through December 31, 2016: 304 individual registrations, male 223 and 81 females. Our goal of keeping homeless people safe and alive is being met: the Day Shelter is open 7 days a week Monday through Saturday from 8:00 am – 4:00 pm. and Sunday 8:00am to 2:00pm. The Day Shelter addresses these specific needs: safety, hunger, shelter, health/welfare, a sense of personal dignity and assistance with obtaining employment. We have recently expanded our self-help support by offering adult educational services in reading and math. Hunger affects a broader economic strata than only the homeless. Many of the families and individuals who come to the Day Shelter are seeking food, but not shelter. We provide a daily self-serve breakfast that includes a protein item as well as a starch and snacks throughout the day. Forty ‘grab and go’ Brown Bag lunches are made on Saturday. We encourage people to spend the day at the shelter instead of on the streets, in parks or other inhospitable places. FCHS’s Day Shelter allows inebriates to stay during the day, but there are behavior limits they must observe. Safety and cleanliness are two behaviors required of our consumers to meet these standards. No alcohol is allowed on the premises. All funds received go to the running of the Day Shelter. Donations of clothing, food, money and volunteer hours keep the doors of the Day Shelter open each day. Location: Mailing Address:
