If you've passed by the colorful sign in front of 2204 Tongass for Frantic Fran's Mocha Madness and thought it was "just another coffee bar", you would be mistaken. Stepping
inside the door is like walking into an exotic paradise.

The Fran in the Frantic is Fran Hoyt (Haida) who was born in Ketchikan and raised in Hydaburg. Hoyt who graduated from school in Seattle is the owner of the newly opened Frantic Fran's Mocha Madness which debuted on June 21st. Hoyt is also the long time owner of the Inspirations Beauty Salon located a few doors down.

Hoyt said she wanted to offer a "warm, colorful and welcoming environment " in which people could relax and enjoy the varied menus she offers. Menus which include a wide variety of hot beverages from mochas to Chai tea and iced beverages such as Italian sodas, milk shakes, orange blossoms, frappes and jet teas. Breakfast, lunch and dinner menus offers daily specials, homemade soups, a salad bar and a sandwich bar. But Frantic Fran's offers even more - it is a place where people can drop in for games such as chess, checkers and cards. Frantic Fran's also has a private room for small conferences or meetings. The latest addition is the cyber-bar equipped with computers with internet access. Hoyt hopes to soon add a piano and she extends a welcome to local musicians and singers to come in and jam. Hoyt is assisted in the business by her daughter Kayleigh Hoyt along with Erin Effenberger, and Jen Hansen.

Hoyt said she wanted the decor to reflect a happy and cheerful atmosphere but one that also represented her heritage. Coming from a family with a long background in fishing, homage is paid to fishing by the display of historical photographs on the walls and on the floor - yes, the floor. Decoratively placed around the floor are photos and marine charts which have been laminated onto the floor. Many of the photographs cover a span of over 70 years and were given to her by Ketchikan resident Joe Demmert, a friend of her mother Helen Leask.

Blaine Rogers, a newcomer to Ketchikan from Portland, Oregon, was enjoying the atmosphere of the conversation room on Friday afternoon. Rogers said he is a new-comer to Ketchikan arriving three weeks ago to visit a friend but had prepared for his visit for
months by reading Sitnews and by reading June Allen's feature stories.

Upcoming events at Frantic Fran's include a visit and show by renowned designer Dorothy Grant (Haida) of Pacific Northwest Native clothing. Grant's upcoming designer shows will be held on July 24th and 25th.

On August 30th, in celebration of her birthday, Hoyt will host a drawing for 20,000 Alaska Airlines' miles. Customers can sign up for the drawing during every visit .

Frantic Fran's is open six days a week and closed on Sunday. Hours of operation are from 7:00 am until the last customer leaves.

Frantic Fran's is a smoke and alcohol free environment for old and young alike to enjoy.
