Ketchikan: Babies
are "Born to Read" - A unique community partnership
has made possible a new project to encourage reading among Ketchikan's
youngest: the infants.
"We want new moms and
dads to know there is no child too young to begin using the library,"
said Children's Librarian Charlotte Glover. The project, Born
to Read, has been several years in the dreaming, planning and
fundraising stages. The Friends of the Public Library together
with the Ketchikan Educational Association conceived the idea
of sending each newborn home from the hospital with their first
book. Recently two other sponsors - Wal-Mart and the Ketchikan
Chamber of Commerce - signed on to help fund this effort. - Read

Ketchikan: Listen to this story... For some people,
December 31 was a time to reflect on the last year. For others
it was a time to look forward and make resolutions. A group of
runners on Prince of Wales Island decided to mark the passing
of 2003 by running 50 kilometers on an icy stretch of road. Jay
Marble has this report.

June Allen Column
Thanks,
Ladies, for the Library; From Bookcase to Building(s) - One
thing Ketchikan's founding fathers didn't think of was a library.
In their 1900 petition for Incorporation of the city - and thereby
for the ability to qualify for outside assistance as well as
the right to raise local taxes to pay for community needs - one
of the first things those men had been thinking of was the need
for a school. In fact, there were those fellows who were certain
their down-south sweethearts or wives would refuse to join them
in the wilds of Revilla Island if there were no school for their
children! And so the first schoolhouse was promptly built. As
mothers arrived with their children and newcomer families also
began to arrive, Ketchikan promised to grow. And it was the women
of Ketchikan who thought immediately of the need for a library.
