pushed through new rules ending the practice of ordering states
to carry out laws without providing the funding - leaving it
to the states to increase taxes needed to pay for costly programs.

Access Project SDEIS Signed by Federal Highway Administration
- The Department of Transportation and Public Facilities announced
Thursday that the Supplemental Draft Environmental Impact Statement
(SDEIS) for the Juneau Access Improvements Project was accepted
and signed Tuesday, January 11 by the Federal Highway Administration

Makes Case Against Renkes - Senator Hollis French, D-Anchorage,
laid out the case against Attorney General Gregg Renkes Thursday
in a speech on the Senate floor, saying "I am not calling
for the impeachment of the Attorney General. I am saying that
it is time for the members of this body to begin to think about
it and debate it. We all have an obligation to protect the public

Alaska: State, IBU Reach Tentative Agreement
on Fairweather
- Negotiators for the
State of Alaska have reached a tentative agreement with the largest
of the three maritime unions representing crewmembers of the
M/V Fairweather, the state's fast vehicle ferry. Agreement
was reached earlier this week with the Inlandboatmens Union (IBU)
on a three-year contract. Contract talks have continued with
the IBU after the state declared an impasse in negotiations in
