Southeast Alaska: Alaskan Dream Cruises Adds New Itineraries & Ports of Call - Alaskan Dream Cruises has announced three new itineraries, additional ports of call and ship renovations.

Alaskan Dream Cruises Adds New Itineraries & Ports of Call

The 42-passenger Alaskan Dream will sail on three new itineraries in 2012

Alaskan Dream Cruises is owned and operated by an Alaska Native family in Sitka, Alaska. The company will operate its second season from May through September 2012.

The 42-passenger Alaskan Dream will sail on three new itineraries in 2012: an eight-day trip that focuses on many less-explored destinations, including Hobart Bay and Kasaan, and two more comprehensive 11- and 13-day trips through the Inside Passage.

The three itineraries also include new ports of call for the cruise line: Ketchikan, Skagway, Haines, Thorne Bay, Kasaan, Wrangell and Gustavus. - More...

Southeast Alaska: Sea otters numbers grow in Southeast Alaska after extirpation by the fur trade - Sea otters were extirpated by the fur trade from most of Alaska by the late 1800’s. Eleven remnant colonies remained in the state; however none of these were in southeast Alaska (SE AK). In an effort to re-establish sea otters in their historical range, otters were translocated to six locations in Southeast Alaska between 1965-1969 by the Alaska Department of Fish and Game. The re-introduction was successful, and sea otters gradually reoccupied large areas of SE AK.

In 2010 and 2011 the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service conducted an aerial survey in Southeast Alaska to estimate sea otter abundance in all known otter habitat and to document range expansion into new areas. We found that the sea otter population has increased in both range and number, but the animals have not yet fully re-colonized all of Southeast Alaska. We now estimate that there are a total of 19,989 sea otters in the Southeast Alaska population. Otter numbers have increased by 4% per year in the northern area of Southeast Alaska and by 12% per year in the southern area since they were last surveyed in 2002 and 2003, respectively. We know that population densities of sea otter in Southeast Alaska are still generally below those in other areas (including Prince William Sound), but, conversely, we don’t know what densities would be appropriate to the habitat found in Southeast Alaska. - More...

Alaska: State health department partners with nonprofit to get kids moving; Partnership to plan three-month physical activity challenge for Alaska children - More Alaska elementary school children will have the chance to participate in a three-month Healthy Futures Challenge that makes physical activity fun and encourages kids to start a regular habit of being active.

Healthy Futures, the signature program of the nonprofit Alaska Sports Hall of Fame, is a new partner with the Alaska Department of Health and Social Services. Healthy Futures has been promoting and encouraging childhood physical activity since 2003. The department now joins Providence Health & Services Alaska as the two primary sponsors of the program.

Alaska parents concerned about the growing obesity problem in Alaska founded Healthy Futures. Today, about 3 of every 10 children in Alaska are overweight or obese, said Dr. Ward Hurlburt, Alaska’s chief medical officer. - More...

Alaska: Alaska Career Lattice Branches Out - An upgraded online tool – the Alaska Career Lattice — is designed to help employers and job seekers see a broader range of options. The lattice is based on extensive analysis by the Alaska Department of Labor and Workforce Development, which tracked the occupation-to-occupation movements of Alaska workers over a nine-year period and identified the most common career tracks to and from every occupation.

“In today’s evolving marketplace, it’s becoming more rare to stick to a single profession for an entire working life,” Labor and Workforce Development Commissioner Click Bishop said. “A worker may be unexpectedly looking to replace a job he or she loved because of the changes in an industry or a labor market.” - More...

jpg Susan Stamper BrownSusan Stamper Brown: New EPA Regulations Are Harmful to “The Folks - An eleventh-hour ruling by the U.S. Court of Appeals in D.C. to delay an Environmental Protection Agency’s Cross-State Air Pollution Rule (CSAPR) scheduled to go into effect January 1, 2012 saved the day for Americans who are doing their best to make ends meet in this struggling economy and cannot afford higher electricity bills.

The cost of CSAPR is extremely high according to the House Energy and Commerce Committee, which released a December 31, 2011 statement claiming had the ruling not been blocked, CSAPR combined with other current and pending EPA regulations, would have raised consumers’ electricity bills and jeopardized up to 1.6 million jobs -- at a consumer cost of nearly $21 billion annually. Very much like the administration’s “jobs saved or created” verbiage, the administration makes “lives saved” or illnesses “prevented” claims on its EPA website. One can make a case for anything until, over time, facts prevail.

The delay buys Americans some time, and one can only hope it is enough time to get a new president in office to change the atmosphere in Washington. After all, don’t we have more pressing matters to attend to? Iran’s recent threat to seal off the Strait of Hormuz could, in effect, interrupt the shipment of nearly one-fifth of the world’s oil supply. And while Iran’s threat will likely remain just that, there is no time like the present to ratchet up domestic oil drilling and explore cleaner ways to produce energy from our own natural resources.

But it won’t happen on Obama’s watch. Nor will it happen until the EPA’s power is either reduced or nullified altogether. The Gulf Oil spill was a dream-come-true for many, in that the crisis gave the administration an excuse to tighten regulations and put a choke-hold on future production. There is no doubt, that when it comes to matters that truly matter to him, President Obama is an uncompromising ideologue. I recall no one, save a minute percentage of Americans, who wanted Obamacare, but we got it anyway -- because the Democrat-controlled Congress handed it to him on a silver platter. Not to mention the Stimulus plan and the government takeover of banks and the automobile industry. He promised “fundamental change” and he meant what he said. - More...

letter Hundred Million Dollar Penny: Shine the light By A. M. Johnson - Hummm, several favorable comments regarding my post to "Lisa,Mark,Don" post regarding the out of control budget issue.

In response I then offer these responders the following video regarding what 100 Million Dollars represents to our National Debt. So enjoy what has and continues to happen as the blundering continues and our Country spirals towards the European Model. O! The President is on the verge of asking for another 1.5 Trillion dollars. - More...

letterRE: Ron Paul By Chris Schelb - This letter is in rebuttal to comments made by Donald Moskowitz that were published by SitNews on 12-28-11 regarding Ron Paul.

Thank you not again for being the mouthpiece of AIPAC and Israel.  Normally I ignore your propaganda.  Your most recent letter goes to the extreme and reveals your true devotion and patriotism to Israel.  Many of your comments are slanted and appear to be the words of a true neo-con and promoter of war and not in the best interest of the US. - More...

letterRon Paul:  Unfit To Be President By Donald A. Moskowitz - Ron Paul disavowed knowledge of anti-Israel, possibly anti-Jewish, anti-black and anti-gay views expressed in his newsletters in the 1980s and1990s, but I assume he knew the contents of his newsletters.  He was the editor. - More...

letterWreck of the Ancon By John McDermott - In the summer of 1995 I was living in Ketchikan (I was born and raised in Alaska, and lived most of my life in Ketchikan). For no particular reason, I went to the local library. While there, I happened upon a few 'art' books that caught my eye, and so I took a couple of them home. In one of them I spotted a small image of a painting entitled 'Wreck of the Ancon,' which really got my attention when I realized that it was painted by Albert Bierstadt (one of the most talented and legendary painters of the late 19th century), and that it was also a 'local' scene (Loring Bay, near Ketchikan). Somehow, I got the urge to obtain a copy of that painting. But since I couldn't easily find a way to obtain a copy (no internet access in those days), I decided to paint a copy of it myself, in oil paint (I'd been an artist for many years, and had won the 'First Place' blue ribbon in the Professional Painting division at the then-famous annual Ketchikan Arts & Crafts Guild Art Show). - More...

letterHelp Us Fire Congress By Roy T Newsom - The US Congress has continued to bargain away our future with the constant error of logic that compromise is necessary to get along with their political adversaries.  Ninety percent of the incumbents are re-elected every two years.  The same politicians that have caused all our problems are put back in office to continue the same mistakes over and over. - More...

letterRe: Tonka timber sale By Alan R. McGillvray - Well folks the eco-communists are at it again, doing every thing they are able to keep people from gainful employment. To make us import our building supplies at greater expense than otherwise needed. Thereby increasing our "carbon footprint" on the planet, but that's probably OK with them, they drive around in their fancy cars, write big checks from money that doesn't come from local sources, just so they can have a pristine playground. - More...

letterRE: Biometric Scanning By Ken Leland - Why does this not surprise me? We already have "Big Brother" looking over our shoulder and examining our private lives. George Orwell was a true visionary, way ahead of his time.I have always said that 1984 authored by him should be mandatory reading for our students at least by middle school. - More...

letterRE: Biometric scanning By April Harper - I totally agree with Charlanne Thomas. I was also appalled when I received a letter from my child's school stating that they had their fingers scanned!! letterThe Gravina Island Cleanup By Jerry Cegelske - The Gravina Island Cleanup began on July 1, 2006 after the Borough was notified that the grant request for a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Grant for Coastal Marine Habitat Restoration had been approved.  The cleanup activities ended on October 31, of this year with a last load of marine debris placed in the dumpster near the Harbormaster’s office. - More...

letterBiometric Scanning By Charlanne Thomas - First of all, I would like to make it very clear that I am in no way criticizing the staff of Point Higgins School. I realize they have a difficult job and I appreciate their dedication to our children. My complaint is with technology that is implemented without my consent. Biometric scanning has been implemented at Point Higgins school in an attempt to alleviate manual input of student lunch records and supposedly the library. While I understand that we live in an age where technology is expected, this process was completed on my child without my approval. When I discovered that his finger had been scanned and stored as a "10-digit binary code", it was too late. His unique code has been stored and is available, whether it is deleted or not. I'm sure the School District backs up their systems on a nightly basis, and once something is in a system, it's there for years. - More...
