Ketchikan: Two men arrested for alleged grow operation - Alaska State Troopers from the Ketchikan Post responded Tuesday afternoon to a residence in Ketchikan to investigate the report of a disturbance between two adult males. During the investigation, a marijuana grow operation was discovered inside the residence.

The Alaska Bureau of Investigation's Southeast Alaska Cities Against Drugs (SEACAD) task force in Ketchikan responded to the scene and took over the investigation.

The investigation revealed that the residence contained 48 growing marijuana plants, which weighed an aggregate weight of 47 ounces. An additional 96 ounces of processed marijuana was seized from the residence. - More...

Alaska: Planned Parenthood in Alaska sues state official over new abortion regulation By MARY KAUFFMAN - Planned Parenthood announced it is suing to block intrusive regulations that would require women to report personal medical conditions to the government.  Unilaterally instated by the Parnell Administration earlier this month, despite being rejected by the Alaska legislature last year, the regulations would place further restrictions on abortion procedures deemed medically necessary.

The American Civil Liberties Union, Planned Parenthood Federation of America, and the Center for Reproductive Rights have filed the lawsuit Wednesday on behalf of Planned Parenthood of the Great Northwest in Alaska Superior Court challenging a new regulation that could severely restrict abortion access for low-income women. The plaintiffs sued the state health commissioner Wednesday over new regulations that prevent state Medicaid from covering elective abortions. Named as the defendant is Alaska Health and Social Services Commissioner Bill Steuer & the Alaska Department of Health and Social Services.

The new regulations, set to go into effect on February 2nd, require abortion doctors who receive Medicaid payments to certify that a procedure is "medically necessary" to prevent serious risk to the woman's health, or that the patient is a victim of rape or incest. The lawsuit seeks to prevent the state from enforcing the regulations. - More...

Alaska: Lawsuit Filed by Officer Alledging DOC Management Harassment and Persecution - Officer Randall McLellan, President of the Alaska Correctional Officers Association, filed a lawsuit in the Superior Court of the State of Alaska against the Alaska Department of Corrections Commissioner Joseph Schmidt and Department of Corrections Director of Institutions Bryan Brandenburg.

The lawsuit, filed Tuesday, alleges violations of Officer McLellan’s civil rights under section 1983 of the federal civil rights act (42 United States Code sec. 1983).  The Complaint alleges that for more than five years, Department of Corrections Commissioner Schmidt and Department of Corrections Director of Institutions Brandenburg, have orchestrated a systematic course of harassment and persecution of Officer McLellan for his advocacy on behalf of the Alaska Correctional Officers Association, its members, and the inmate population in Alaska. - More...

Remnants of Neanderthal DNA found in modern humans are associated with diseases including Type 2 diabetes, Crohn's disease, lupus and cirrhosis of the liver, as well as characteristics that affect cold weather tolerance. These new findings are detailed in a paper published in this week's journal Nature.

Harvard Medical School geneticist David Reich is a senior author of the paper and part of a National Science Foundation (NSF)-funded research project that examines how earlier species influence the genetic composition of modern human beings.

"This team of geneticists and biological anthropologists is carrying out cutting-edge research on how the genetic makeup of modern humans has been influenced by past species and past events," said Elizabeth Tran, a program manager in NSF's Social, Behavioral and Economic Sciences directorate. "As methods to analyze ancient DNA continue to improve, we are able to get at answers to ever more fine-grained questions about our evolutionary history." - More...

Science: Scientists reveal cause of one of the most devastating pandemics in human history - An international team of scientists has discovered that two of the world's most devastating plagues – the plague of Justinian and the Black Death, each responsible for killing as many as half the people in Europe—were caused by distinct strains of the same pathogen, one that faded out on its own, the other leading to worldwide spread and re-emergence in the late 1800s. These findings suggest a new strain of plague could emerge again in humans in the future.

Scientists reveal cause of one of the most devastating pandemics in human history

This photo shows a tooth from a victim of the plague. Researchers isolated miniscule DNA fragments from 1500-year-old teeth and reconstructed the genome of the oldest Yersinia pestis, the bacterium responsible for the plague. These are the oldest pathogen genomes obtained to date.

"The research is both fascinating and perplexing, it generates new questions which need to be explored, for example why did this pandemic, which killed somewhere between 50 and 100 million people die out?" questions Hendrik Poinar, associate professor and director of the McMaster Ancient DNA Centre and an investigator with the Michael G. DeGroote Institute for Infectious Disease Research.

The findings are dramatic because little has been known about the origins or cause of the Justinian Plague– which helped bring an end to the Roman Empire – and its relationship to the Black Death, some 800 years later. - More...

letter The Rezoning of Residential land in town to Heavy Industrial and Unrestricted Commercial By Amanda Mitchell - I am concerned again about the attempt to rezone our valley into heavy industrial. This issue keeps reappearing and is making residents weary of the constant disregard of their health and rights on their own property.  Who wants to live in an industrial area? - More...

letter Chloramine in Our Drinking Water: Coming to a Faucet Near You By Amanda Mitchell - Chloramine is extremely toxic to marine life, reptiles and amphibians. There is a potential that our local marine life will be directly affected and harmed. Chloramine can have a half-life of up to 23 days. It has already been seen that if a pipe does rupture it can kill the local fish. Cedar Rapids was fined for killing the fish when a water main broke. The original paper article said only ‘chlorine’, but further investigation concludes that Cedar Rapids was specifically using  chloramine. San Mateo private utility was fined for chloraminated water contaminating Polhemus Creek killing the Steelhead. And there are more examples out there. - More...

letter Let me know when the war on drugs starts By Ken Lewis - Drug Problem? Come on people, problems should be solved not managed. What came first the drug test, or the American who chose not to do dope? With all due respect to those who think drug testing little pockets of certain types of employees is the solution to the problem, you're wrong. If drug testing were a solution to our state/national drug problem, DMV would be used and make drug testing mandatory to operate a vehicle. Time out, not fair, what about my rights, can you hear them marching in solidarity. Them being the ones not tested, who think its funny to see a highly paid ball players go down the tubes for failed Pee-Pee samples, and then excuse the coolness of the other entertainers and artists that blatantly use enough dope to kill a horse. - More...

letter Delete some Federal Holidays By A.M. Johnson - There is little doubt among my acquaintance that I harbor fear from my Government. There is excess overreach by the Federal government into our personal lives far beyond what Natural Law represents. when something comes along that tugs at my frustration with a bit of common sense it is accepted with as a moment of fresh air. The Governor of Maine, Paul La Page is purported to have said in a public speech regarding following Federal laws. - More...

letter Open Letter: LAND USE; WATER RIGHTS By Rick Gustin - To all Senators and Representatives who have supported HB77 or may support it's Senate bill counter part, I wanted to see if I could change your mind on how you vote regarding HB77.  I understand the previously stated reasons for supporting this bill.  I get that industry and perhaps some of the people in state government see our current permitting system as, complex, sometimes confused, perhaps at times overbearing and above all slow.  I realize that many state employees and business leaders would like to see quicker more wide spread resource development throughout the state.  This is seen as providing more jobs and more revenue for the state which is seeing declines in tax revenue and jobs in the oil industry.  I totally get all of that. I also feel that there are many citizens of this state, that do not understand the permitting process, may not care about it, but do care about the natural resources that they use each year, (may take them for granted but will sure bitch like hell if they are gone). - More...

letter WHAT CAN YOU DO? By Diane Gubatayao - Last October, Dr. Andre Rosay from the UAA Justice Center released data from the Alaska Victimization Survey done here in Ketchikan. Shockingly, the results revealed that 50% of adult women in Ketchikan report being victims of domestic or sexual violence in their lifetimes. That means, statistically speaking, that one out of two women that might be shopping at the store, or attending a Kayhi basketball game, or living in your neighborhood, has been a victim of DV or SA. One out of two! Most of us know someone who has been a victim, and we often ask ourselves, “what can I do?”. - More...

letter Open Letter: Unemployment By Forrest A. Mackie - Attn: Lisa Murkowski and Don Young and all Alaska Yahoo politicians; I am an unemployed yahoo who worked the better part of my life working my way up to one of the best jobs at Ketchikan Pulp Company! KPC was the largest employer in this territory and later the state, and the fishing and the logging and the pulp industry were the largest revenue producers for 30 plus years!!  Now I am 70 years young, and due to the whim of you politicians that I watch on TV, now I am constantly disgusted by what I see going on in the Whitehouse in the guise of politics. I am totally bewildered at what I see!! - More...
