audio newsPOW: Listen to this KRBD story... The Craig Ranger District is proposing to build a new recreation cabin. The funding for the cabin comes from mitigation funds stemming from Alaska Power and Telephone's construction of the Black Bear power plant. At one time, the district was thinking of using those funds to build a trail across Baker Island. However, public comments were against that plan and the district eventually decided to purse a new cabin. This would be the district's eighth cabin and the only one accessible from the road system. Jay Marble recently spoke with Angela Gatto, a resource specials with the Craig Ranger District.

Unlike today's notables who arrive by cruise ship for brief visits, earlier celebrity visitors usually came in on their own or someone else's yacht. Most enjoyed Ketchikan's sights, sounds and attractions for at most a few days. But one unexpected visitor found himself stranded for the winter! - Read the rest of this story by June Allen...
