sudioAlaska: Listen to this story - Alaska's Capitol Plan Sparks Talk of a Move - Alaska is the only state in the nation without a capitol building. A design contest is under way, and four nationally prominent architectural firms are competing for the contract. Anne Sutton of member station KTOO reports from Juneau.

Dale McFeatters: Two presidents and their day - Let's get this straight. The White House Office of Management and Budget, the final arbiter of these matters, says the holiday is Washington's Birthday, not Presidents Day, and it says so right there in section 6103(a) of title 5 of the United States Code.- More...

Sharon Randall: An apple a day will at least give you something to ponder - At the urging of my children - who are proving, I must say, smarter as adults than they appeared to be as teenagers - I've been trying to make my peace with apples.

This is not as easy as it might seem. I've known my share of bad apples. Eve was not the last woman to run afoul with fruit. - More...

Dan K. Thomasson: A question of authority - The elephant in the room that was utterly ignored during President Bush's introduction of John Negroponte as his nominee for the new post of director of national intelligence was, of course, the FBI. In assuring reporters and those watching on television that Negroponte would have his ear and his strong support, the president talked only in terms of the CIA. - More...

By June Allen - The little town of Sitka, the capital of Russian Alaska until the U.S. Purchase in 1867, is home to the first of Alaska's modern Pioneer Homes. Built in 1934, it is situated on the old Russian parade grounds. The earlier and comparatively ramshackle "pioneer homes" quarters in the gentler climate of Sitka were founded especially for down-on-their-luck Gold Rush veterans who decided to remain in Alaska after the glory days were over. They were largely a tough and grizzled lot, tobacco-chewing and fond of a good stiff drink or two. - Read the rest of this feature story by June Allen...
