Southeast Alaska: TEMSCO Helicopters begins fleet upgrade - From the Eurocopter booth at Heli-Expo, American Eurocopter announced last week that TEMSCO Helicopters has signed for an AS350 B3 helicopter as it begins a fleet upgrade program. TEMSCO's fleet includes 56 helicopters and 39 of those are Eurocopter aircraft.

"TEMSCO was one of the launch customers for the AStar in North America and they played an integral part in the development of the AS350 B3," explained Larry Roberts, Vice President of Sales, Marketing and Customer Support for American Eurocopter. "This is just the first B3 in the upgrade plan and we look forward to working with them in the future as they continue to upgrade their fleet."

"We have operated AStars since 1983 and we are very comfortable with the reliability and performance of these helicopters," said Joe Hicks, Senior Vice President of Operations at TEMSCO Helicopters. "The B3 is a workhorse and it is perfect for our fleet upgrade plans. It provides us with the extra power and performance we need, plus the added safety features including dual hydraulics and dual FADEC."

The AS350 is a powerful and reliable aircraft that has established itself with its unmatched performance, extensive mission equipment options and the safety of its multiple-redundancy system design. TEMSCO (an acronym from the words: Timber, Exploration, Mining, Survery, Cargo Operations) was founded in 1958 in Ketchikan, Alaska. Its helicopter fleet has grown as it has expanded its operation into tourism, hospital transport, firefighting, international, and other growing markets.

Airplanes had been used in Alaska for decades before TEMSCO placed their helicopter in Alaska in the 1960's. Alaska: Senate Committee to Hold Hearing On Low-Cost Ways to Save Energy; Public Invited to Submit Questions for Energy Experts to Answer - The Senate Resources Committee announced today they will hold a special hearing Wednesday morning to highlight low-cost ways Alaskans can save energy and money. The hearing will be chaired by Senator Bill Wielechowski, D-Anchorage, co-chair of the committee.

The public is invited to submit questions for energy experts from the Alaska Housing Finance Corporation on energy-saving strategies. Questions can be sent to Senator Bill Wielechowski and should be received by 9 a.m. Wednesday morning.

"I urge people to tune in to Gavel to Gavel, or if you're in Juneau, to come to the Capitol Wednesday morning to get some valuable information about how to reduce home energy costs," said Senator Wielechowski. "All over Alaska, people are struggling with extremely high energy costs, and at this meeting we hope to provide them with some good ideas to help save money."

"Simple techniques can pay big dividends when it comes to energy efficiency," added Senator Lesil McGuire, R-Anchorage, co-chair of the Resources Committee. "Investing in educating Alaskans about how to use energy more efficiently is a priority in our omnibus energy plan. Alaska: Governor Urged to Use Mercer Proceeds to Fund Pensions for Public Employees - Senator Hollis French, D-Anchorage, and Senator Dennis Egan, D-Juneau, wrote Governor Sean Parnell, asking him to help re-establish the "defined benefits" system of retirement for public employees.

"Alaska is the only state in the union that doesn't offer our public employees defined retirement benefits," said Senator French. "Our recently-enacted 'defined contributions' system is not fair to our workers, and is bad for the economy."

Previously, public employees who contributed to the Public Employee Retirement System (PERS) or the Teacher Retirement System (TRS) were provided a pension in their retirement years from those systems. This ended when legislation passed to eliminate that benefit for all new public employees. Under the new plan, workers now pay into retirement accounts, and take on all the risks of managing investments.

"Retirees contribute more than $1.5 billion a year to Alaska's economy," said Senator Egan. "The defined benefits system encouraged employees to stay in Alaska and retire here. That's not the case with the new program." - More...

Chief Talik and Captain Ludwig both have been involved with the Neighborhood Watch program in other communities and they bring a wide range of experience and information about this program to Ketchikan.

Neighborhood Watch is just that -- neighbor watching out for neighbor. To belong to a Watch group, it just takes alertness of what and who is in your neighborhood, what neighbor is gone and keeping an eye on his or her home and property. Neighbors would be looking out for each other as a family, tribe or community group. It is often quoted that it takes a community to raise a child. National: Internet makes news shared experience, survey says By BENNY EVANGELISTA - The Internet, especially in the era of Facebook, Twitter and smart phones, is transforming the way Americans consume their daily news into a "shared social experience," according to a report released Monday.

The Web has become the third-most-popular way Americans receive news, behind local and national TV broadcasts, although the majority turn to several online and offline news sources on any given day, according to the Pew Research Center study.

The study paints a picture of American news consumption in 2010 as being a constantly flowing river of information, running 24 hours a day and allowing people to "dip in and dip out," depending on their interests, said Pew Internet Director Lee Rainie.

"News is an ongoing process. It's not something that ends," Rainie said. "There are people who amplify it or dissect it or figure out what angle was missed. There's much more of an element of the continuous conversation of news."

The Pew Internet and American Life Project and Project for Excellence in Journalism commissioned the survey of 2,259 adults in December and January to show how consumers' relationship with the news is changing to one based on "foraging and opportunism," the report said.

"They seem to access news when the spirit moves them or they have a chance to check up on headlines," the report said. They send e-mail, "highlight news stories in their tweets and haggle over the meaning of events in discussion threads."

About 59 percent of Americans get news from online and offline sources, including local television stations (78 percent), national TV networks (73 percent) and the Internet (61 percent), the report said.

And 54 percent listen to radio news, while 50 percent read a local newspaper, although only 17 percent said they read a national newspaper. Meanwhile, just 7 percent said they get their news from a single source and only 35 percent have a favorite site. - More...

I don't know if you have children, but I don't know of one single Pediatrician who is going to have ANY child with a fever outside in just a diaper. Yes, my kids are 4 and 7, and I have to argue with them occasionally about wearing their coats outside to go play. I can understand where high school students don't wear coats, but having an infant outside in a diaper there is no excuse for. If a child has a dangerously high fever you alternate tylenol and ibuprophen every 4 hours, you run them a cool bath, not so cold that they go into shock. If you know of ANY doctor that is recommending a child go outside in 40 even 50 degree weather to get them over a fever, they need to be turned in for malpractice. Indoor Sports Facility By Jeff Carson - You may have noticed a petition going around town that asks for your support in urging the Borough to help a local group remodel the veneer building into an indoor turf field facility. This letter is to answer the questions that have come about because of this petition. First of all, the plan is to install a 250' by 100' sport turf field that would run from the south wall of the building 250 feet to the north. Currently in Ketchikan there are 2,241 kids who participate in Little League baseball, youth softball, youth soccer, wrestling, dribblers league, gymnastics, Kayhi baseball, softball & soccer & youth football. All of these kids would benefit from this facility, especially in the Winter months. Sealaska Land Bill: Single Interest Proposal By Sandy Powers - The opening paragraph of Mr. McNeil's letter clearly sets the tone for the Sealaska/ congressional delegation's attitude toward the rest of us who do NOT stand to benefit from Sealaska land bill S881. To state, "The Tongass National Forest is a Native Place" clearly implies that those of us who are non-natives do not belong here, should not have a say, and our opinions are dismissible. Southeast Natives gave up claims to over 17 million acres of land for approximately 375,000 acres. From less than one-half of one percent of all lands conveyed under the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act (ANCSA), Sealaska has shared over $300 million dollars with other Alaska Natives under Section 7(i) revenue sharing. Kayhi's National Art's Honor Society By Frankie Urquhart - I want to acknowledge the wonderful students who are a part of Ketchikan High School's National Art's Honor Society. These students, led by Jeanette Sweetman, did an amazing job decorating the Schoenbar Valentine's Dance last Friday. This group of students worked for hours after school everyday and put in 20+ hours building pieces of art for the dance. They crafted a very impressive Eiffel Tour that became the center piece for our dance. They also built a heart shaped frame that students were able to stand in front of to take pictures with their friends, and a few other wonderful banners. These students did all of this on their own time, and the day of the dance actually came and set up for 4 hours before the dance. - More...

On my way into work I see high school students walking to school with NO jacket! I see middle and elementary aged students waiting at the bus stop or walking to school with NO jacket! It's raining and windy out, but these kids don't have a jacket on. Why is that?
