Ketchikan: It's Official: Alaska Ship and Drydock Signed on as a Partner to Design Alaska Class Ferry - The Alaska Marine Highway System (AMHS) announced Tuesday that Alaska Ship and Drydock LLC (ASD) has officially signed on as a partner with the State of Alaska to design the Alaska Class Ferry.
The Professional Services Agreement contract signed between the state and Alaska Ship and Drydock designates the Ketchikan-based shipyard as the Construction Manager/General Contractor (CM/GC) for the design phase of the Alaska Class Ferry project.
“I’m pleased to see that the design work for this new vessel can now begin in earnest using the CM/GC process,” said Michael Neussl, Alaska Department of Transportation & Public Facilities Deputy Commissioner for Marine Operations. “ASD, along with Elliott Bay Design Group, the state’s naval architect and engineering firm for the project, can now get down to designing the ship that will serve Alaskans for years to come.”
Alaska Ship and Drydock operates the Ketchikan Shipyard under a long-term private/public partnership agreement with the Alaska Industrial Development and Export Authority (AIDEA).
Ketchikan: National Drug Collection Day April 28th - The Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) encourages Alaskans to participate in National Drug Collection Day Saturday April 28, 2012 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event is sponsored by the Drug Enforcement Administration of the U.S. Department of Justice.
According to the U.S. Department of Justice & the Drug Enforcement Administration, the collection site in Ketchikan will be at the Plaza Mall where unwanted or expired prescription medication can be turned over to the Alaska State Troopers.
National Drug Collection Day was established to protect public health and the environment through safe collection and disposal of unwanted, expired prescription medication. Drug collection reduces the chance of drugs being improperly discarded where they can potentially enter water bodies and harm the environment or human health. - More...

Alaska: New technology tracks sparrow migration for first time from California to Alaska - Using tiny tags to track a bird's location, biologists from PRBO Conservation Science (PRBO) have unlocked the mystery of where Golden-crowned Sparrows, which overwinter in California, go to breed in the spring. Published this week in the journal PLoS ONE, the study reveals for the first time the exact migration route of this small songbird to its breeding sites in coastal Alaska.
During a time when birds are experiencing the negative impacts of climate and land-use changes, being able to pinpoint the most important breeding and stopover places is critical to prioritizing conservation investments.
PRBO scientists attached small tags that record day length to Golden-crowned Sparrows wintering in and near Point Reyes National Seashore before they headed north on spring migration. When the birds returned the following fall, four tagged birds were safely recaptured, the tags were removed, and the data downloaded to a computer. - More...

I have great concerns about Ketchikan this Summer, specifically the Southeast Alaska Discovery Center, (SEDC).This Alaska Public Lands Information Center is a natural history, native history, economic and recreation information clearinghouse for the Tongass National Forest. There are three other APLIC's in the state, Anchorage, Fairbanks, and Tok. - More...

We've Got Talent By
Judith Green -
'The Somewhat True Tale of Robin Hood' was SO well done. BRAVO! to each of the students who participated - whether you had a speaking or non-speaking part, job well done! It was so much fun to see each of you so well poised and positioned - just enjoying. The match-up of participant to parts was very (evident)successful. (Yes, "I got that") - More...

Second amendment attack by Congressional Socialist By
A. M. Johnson - I recently sent the following letter to Alaska's Congressional Representative, Don Young. As I understand it, Senator Lisa Murkowski voted in favor of this legislation through SB 1813, legislation related to the highway construction funding. Her explanation to me was that the benefits of federal funding for construction including ferrys was too important. Yet, the content of the legislation included the following form of yet another effort to restrict and control the citizens of this Nation. RINO's such as Senator Murkowski are selling our Constitutional rights to the devil. While I am too old to suffer the consequences of this continued downward spiral to Socialism, my Grandchildren and worst, my Great Grandchildren, whom I am growing old with are the ultimate victims. - More...
