Show Dazzling - The 2004 Fourth of July ended in Ketchikan
with a brilliant fireworks show lasting about a half hour. The
event was coordinated by the Ketchikan Lions Club which has coordinated
the Fourth of July fireworks show for almost twenty years.

A Fourth of July celebration
without fireworks would be unthinkable to Americans. The tradition
began when our country proclaimed its independence from England
as John Adams wrote, "The day (independence) will be the
most memorable in America. It ought to be solemnized with pomp
and parade, bonfires and illuminations (fireworks) from one end
of the continent to the other."
And following tradition, Ketchikan
ended its Fourth of July celebration with illuminations! The
fireworks were lit from a barge anchored off the north end in
the Tongass Narrows bringing to an end another wonderful Fourth
of July in Ketchikan. - Read

Ketchikan: Administration
Reaches Tentative Agreements With MEBA and MM&P Union
- The Murkowski administration announced Saturday that it has
reached tentative agreements with the Marine Engineers' Beneficial
Association and the Masters, Mates and Pilots Union, two of the
three Alaska Marine Highway System bargaining units. The third
Marine Highway System bargaining unit, the Inlandboatmen's Union

Ketchikan: Governor
Signs Stedman, Williams Bills in Ketchikan; Affecting Salmon
and Dive Fisheries, Food Safety Program, and More - Governor
Frank Murkowski on Saturday signed eight fisheries-related and
other bills while in Ketchikan. The fisheries bills relate to
the dive fishery, salmon seine boat length, disclosure of the
origin of salmon and taxes on directly marketed salmon. The remaining
four bills relate to taxation of attorneys' fees, federal forest
receipts, an overhaul of the state's food safety program, and
state primacy for water pollution permits related to timber harvesting

Goucher
Crowned Fourth of July Queen - After competing for over eight
weeks in three different categories, Chelsa Goucher was crowned
Ketchikan's Fourth of July Queen Saturday evening at the South
East Alaska Discovery Center.
Six young women competed for
the crown in the categories of 1) presentation, 2) community
involvement and 3) raffle ticket sales. According to information
provided by Lisa Machado for The Lions Club, the presentation
forum was held at the Discovery Center on Friday, July 2nd. The
six women vying for the crown had opportunities to present speeches,
dances and slide shows to earn points. - Read

Ketchikan:
Rubber Duck Race Winners Announced - The winning rubber ducks
are in for the First City Rotary's 16th Annual Rubber Duck Race.
The payoff was big for Harley Lewis whose lucky rubber duck claimed
the 1st place prize. Winning the race down Ketchikan Creek, Lewis'
swift little rubber duck brought home the big bucks for Lewis
in the amount of $2,500.
Following close behind Lewis'
duck, was Henry Keene's rubber ducky. Keene's quick moving little
rubber duck claimed the second place winning pot for Keene in
