In the
summer of 1901, bustling, one-year-old Ketchikan was building
its first schoolhouse and had set a hefty tax rate of 7.5 mills
to pay for it. Juneau was busily producing gold and had just
been named the new capital city of Seward's Ice Box, snatching
that honor away from beautiful little Sitka, once the Russian
capital of Alaska. - Read

School Board Wednesday night is slated to ponder dispersing White
Cliff Elementary School students between a local church, the
Pioneers Home, Point Higgins Elementary and Ketchikan High School
next school year. As Deanna Garrison reports, the Board will
also consider a three-year contract for school district cooks,
custodians and paraprofessionals.

Vessle Arctic Sunrise Arrives In Ketchikan - The Greenpeace
ship the Arctic Sunrise arrived for a two-day stop in Ketchikan
on Monday beginning a one month tour of Southeast Alaska. During
the Arctic Sunrise's Southeast Alaska tour, the Greenpeace Forest
Campaign will be calling for a moratorium on commercial logging
and road construction in the Tongass National Forest.- Read

Alaska: Oil
Tax Loopholes Gave More to Oil Corporations In Profits Than Alaska
Received in ANS Oil Revenue - With the close of the State
of Alaska's 2004 fiscal year this month, the state announced
oil averaged $31.71/barrel for the past 12 months. According
to a recent Department of Revenue Estimate, oil companies received
over $1 billion more in pure profits from ANS clued oil than
the state received in total ANS oil revenue. That imbalance has
caused Former Governors Jay Hammond and Wally Hickel, former
Deputy Commissioner of Revenue Deborah Vogt, and 7 Democrats
who proposed oil revenue reform legislation this year, to call
for a revisitation of the tax loopholes in Alaska's outdated
oil tax structure. -
