Tossed Butt Likely Cause of Dock Fire - At approximately
5 pm Thursday, a small fire broke out on the city dock in front
of the Ketchikan Mining Company on Front Street. According to
a Ketchikan City Police staff person, it appears the fire was
caused by a lit cigarette that was dropped between the cracks
setting the creosote coating applied to pilings on fire. - More...

Requests Aerial Drone Fire Overflights - Governor Frank Murkowski
on Thursday sent a letter to the U.S. Coast Guard, asking them
to assign one of the agency's aerial drones on a two-day mission
to collect information on the Boundary Fire in Alaska's Interior.

Ketchikan: Listen to this KRBD story... The State of
Alaska filed criminal charges in Ketchikan District Court Thursday
against Greenpeace for allegedly breaking a state oil spill prevention
law earlier this month. Deanna Garrison has this report.

Alaska won support for an expansion of the Alaska Railroad, construction
of a natural gas pipeline and the Bradfield Road Project at a
Pacific Northwest Economic Region Summit in Victoria British
Columbia last week. As Deanna Garrison reports, a resolution
passed by the summit's delegates states that the Bradfield Road
will generate sustainable jobs and strengthen economic ties between
British Columbia and Southeast Alaska.

charges Greenpeace for violating Alaska environmental laws
- State prosecutors filed charges against Greenpeace, Inc., Capt.
Arne J. Sorensen and ship's agent Willem Jan Beekman in Ketchikan
today alleging violations of two state environmental laws. The
information charges that the defendants were criminally negligent
for operating in state waters without an oil discharge prevention
and contingency plan and for failing to file proof of financial
responsibility for oil discharge damages. -
