Ketchikan: Woman Dies In Home Fire; Young mother and child escape By MARY KAUFFMAN - A huge structural fire south of Ketchikan on Forss Avenue tragically claimed the life of an older woman Thursday morning. The two story rental duplex owned by Carl and Lisa Thompson of Ketchikan, was occupied by two families. At home at the time in the lower unit was the victim and the family's dog, also lost in the fire.

Although tragic that this fire claimed a life, Chief Steve Rydeen, of the
South Tongass Volunteer Fire Department said it could have been a more tragic incident for the community of Ketchikan. Rydeen, said a woman and child in the upstairs duplex was able to escape without injuries. He said the woman, whose name was not released, reported she was in her back bedroom, heard something and as she brought her baby and dog out of her home, the flames were shooting over their heads.
Chief Rydeen said, " I was the first one here, rolled up, and we had 100% involvement of the structure, heavy fire, 30 to 40 foot flames. I had my first engine into attack with a massive stream and knocked the body of the fire down and able to do the rest with handlings."
It wasn't until later that someone came up and said that there was someone who wasn't accounted for said Chief Rydeen. He said, "Because of the condition of the structure at that time, we were unable to put someone in the structure to search, for fear of collapse." Rydeen said eventually they were able to locate the victim and the deceased dog.
He said he called the State Fire Marshall who was expected to arrive Friday morning. The insurance adjuster was also expected Friday morning. Once the Fire Marshal arrives, a complete investigation will be conducted to determine the cause of the fire and the exact area of origin of the fire.
Chief Rydeen said the call originally came in from the city fire department for a structure fire and they thought it was on Fourth Avenue. Once it was realized that wasn't the proper address, the call was directed to South Tongass Volunteer Fire Department. Chief Rydeen said they received the call around 8:45 am.
Chief Rydeen had a crew on site all night Thursday to make sure there are no "hot spots" and to secure the site to ensure a clean site for the State Fire Marshal. The cause of the fire will not be known until the investigation is completed said Rydeen.
Rydeen said he called for "mutual aid" from Ketchikan Fire Department responding with one engine and approximately 6 personnel. He said he also requested "mutual aid" from North Tongass Volunteer Fire Department for man-power. Rehab Units from all three fire departments were on site. The Rehab Units for the firefighters they can be provided fluids and nutrition, keep them cool, so they can continue to work.
A neighbor living across the street, Cindy Himmelberger, said she was sitting with her daughter eating breakfast when she heard what sounded like three gun shoots. "I got up and looked out the window and behind my house I saw a mother hollering, her child crying, and watching her house burn." - More...

Ketchikan: Crowley Completes Acquisition of Anderes Oil in Ketchikan - Crowley’s petroleum distribution group (CPD Alaska LLC) completed its acquisition of Anderes Oil, a longtime, well-respected fuel company in Ketchikan on July 1. The Anderes family, after 50 years of serving Ketchikan, is leaving the oil business to pursue other interests.

“Congratulations to the entire team on reaching this milestone,” said Rocky Smith, senior vice president and general manager. “This is our first venture in the southeast Alaska market and we are very excited to be expanding into this region. I am confident that we will be successful in integrating this business into the Crowley family while continuing the tradition of great service to the community of Ketchikan.”
While ownership will be changing, little else will. The company will continue to provide great products and services under the Anderes name with its 20 employees, who will be welcomed as new members of the Crowley team.
“Anderes and Crowley have similar cultures and values emphasizing safety, environmental protection and customer service,” said Bob Cox, Crowley vice president. “Our goal is a seamless transition and supporting the fine employees of Anderes Oil going forward.”
Crowley was founded in 1892, when founder Thomas Crowley - the grandfather of current chairman, president and CEO Thomas B. Crowley Jr. - purchased an 18-foot Whitehall boat to provide transportation of personnel and supplies to ships anchored on San Francisco Bay. The present structure, in which Crowley Maritime Corporation serves as a holding company for business lines and all subsidiaries, was put in place in 1992. The company is wholly and privately owned by the Crowley family and Crowley employees. - More...

Fish Factor: Federal Fishery Act Undergoing Reauthorization; Will dictate for generations the parameters for managing the fishing industry By LAINE WELCH - The rules that govern our nation’s fisheries are being retooled so it’s reassuring that Congress isn’t traveling in uncharted seas.
Over 80 percent of Alaska’s fish landings hail come from federally managed waters, and the Magnuson-(Ted) Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act is the primary law ruling US fisheries. The Act is undergoing reauthorization for the first time in seven years.
First enacted in 1976, the MSA “Americanized” the fisheries by booting out foreign fleets to beyond 200 miles from our shores. It created the nation’s eight fishery management councils, and its laws dictate everything from fishing and bycatch quotas, catch shares, observer coverage, habitat protection and so much more.
The MSA legislation is now in the lap of the Senate Oceans, Atmosphere, Fisheries and Coast Guard subcommittee, chaired by Alaska Senator Mark Begich.
“It’s the big deal – it really does dictate for generations to come the parameters for managing the fishing industry of this country,” Begich said from his DC office after launching MSA “listening sessions” in Kodiak and Fairbanks and next month in Kenai.
The sessions are not designed as debates, but to “put things on the table,” he said.
“Both the positive and the negative; what’s working and what’s not. So at the end of the day, we can look at it in a broad perspective and determine where and if we need to make modifications,” Begich added. - More...

Alaska: History Made: Group Gathers 40,000 Signatures From 40 Districts in 90 Days - On behalf of over forty thousand Alaskan supporters, the Vote Yes Repeal the Giveaway campaign announced today the gathering of over forty thousand signatures in forty districts across Alaska, far more than required to put Senate Bill 21 to a vote of the Alaskan people next year.
“What became clear as the campaign came to a close was the urgency most Alaskans felt to go out and find a petition book to sign. People of all shapes, colors, sizes, and political persuasions signed the book as Alaskans because they don't understand the bad business deal made last session by compromised politicians. Giving billions away with nothing in return just doesn't make any sense,” stated campaign coordinator Pat Lavin.
Hundreds of volunteers from across the state responded to the urgency of the 90 day timeline. Mandated to pass a signature threshold in 30 districts, last night the campaign officially passed the signature threshold in all forty Alaskan districts. Thank you to Kotzebue, Haines, Bethel, Craig, Elim, Dillingham, Juneau, Anchorage, Sitka, Wasilla, Fairbanks, Valdez, Ketchikan, Nome and the other dozens and dozens of communities who rallied together logistically to gather signatures. - More...

Facts Regarding STVFD Grant By Steve Rydeen -
With all due respect to Mr. Plute, I find it remarkable that he didn’t investigate before writing his letter. The South Tongass Fire Chief and the Borough Manager are readily available to answer questions and to provide accurate information. The project in question was a grant request to the State for a back-up Generator and alarm system for the new Mountain Point fire station. - More...

Another tax break for the rich? By Norm Noggle -
I appreciated reading Bill Walker's piece regarding the recommendation to allow the public to vote on any proposed tax giveaways to the oil companies in this state. Gov. Parnell came up with the scare tactic that the oil companies need to have reduced taxes in order to continue to have the financial resources to explore for more oil. - More...

Maisch Hoodwinks Congress About the Tongass By Larry Edwards -
Alaska's chief forester, Chris Maisch, should be fired and be held in contempt of Congress. Falsehoods were plentiful in his June 25 testimony to the Senate Energy & Natural Resources Committee, representing the state on Tongass National Forest issues. - More...

Sealaska By Michael Beasley - Humbling opinion. Leaves You with a heavy heart. I believe Sealaska is a product of the Landclaims settlement and has lost its way by hiding behind being a Corporation. Altering the election system and creating a monopoly of directors is the cancer with Sealaska Corporation. Nothing will change until a fair election system occurs. - More...

Bugge's Beach By Clayton J. Benner -
I grew up in Ketchkan, bike riding out to Bugge's Beach many summer days as a teanager. In about 1945 or 1946, when I was just learning to drive, Dich Borch organized a big project at the beach. He gathered a bunch of us youny-ins and, with the help of Public Works equipment (trucks, bull-dozer, etc) we scooped out the muck from the enclosed beach area. Then the big job. We added 2'-8" to the top of the dam and a diving board mount on top of that. - More...

The Lies and Truths of Local Government By Ed Plute -
With the recent revelations of scandal after scandal in our current government, it is only a matter of time before our own communities corruption comes to light. Exhaustion is the only word that comes to mind when dealing with the current system. Not to mention as we speak, every person reading this is certainly wondering what is REALLY going on? Not only out there in the world, but right here in our own town of Ketchikan. For the past few years the world has been progressively waking up to the reality that our own bureaucracy is a facade and that our current local governments are not much better. Supporting personal agendas through manipulative processes and seemingly getting away with it time and time again. However, it is about time we put our own community back together. How, you may ask, do we do this? - More..

Let Alaskans Vote on Oil Tax Overhaul By Bill Walker -
The fight for Alaskan statehood took 88 years - from the purchase of Alaska from Russia in 1867 to our Union admittance in 1959. During this time, Alaskans suffered one form of exploitation after another. - More...

Referendum to repeal SB 21 By Sen. Bert Stedman -
Americans just celebrated the declaration of our independence from the British and the birth of our country based on democratic principles and individual rights enshrined in our Constitution. In light of this important holiday, I find it rather fitting that on Wednesday my family and I exercised our right to petition the government by signing the referendum to repeal SB 21, the new petroleum tax that undervalues our oil. Every Alaskan who signs the referendum to repeal SB 21 is simply expressing a desire to participate in a public debate about the selling price of their primary resource. I’m proud to place my name on the referendum with other Alaskans who want to exercise their fundamental right to participate in the government process. - More...

Open Letter: A "Bit" of Governmental waste By A. M. Johnson -
The following has come to my attention. Perhaps you are aware of the issue, perhaps not, It would not be surprising if you are not, It would not be a issue normally visited by the general public and so assumed, would remain hidden un-noticed, ignored, and allowed to continue with congressional awareness unabated. - More...
