Ketchikan: Greenpeace Vessel Will Not Moor at the Port of Ketchikan; City has provided Greenpeace with possible alternative moorage options - The MV Esperanza which is the latest and largest vessel in Greenpeace's fleet is on its way to Ketchikan and Greenpeace is saying, "Originally we were all set to dock, but the agreement has been revoked by the agency for fear that we are a security risk." However, the question as to where the Esperanza will or won't dock when it arrives in Ketchikan has been answered by Ketchikan City Manager Karl R. Amylon. - Click here to read more...

Ketchikan: Lt. Dave Hull Retires After Decades of Service - On Friday evening, over 200 hundred people gathered in Ketchikan to honor Lt. David "Dave" Hull of the Ketchikan Fire Department on his official retirement - or as Hull expressed earlier, his graduation. Hull has served as a firefighter for over twenty years and has also contributed over eight years of volunteer service.

Friends and family along with co-workers came together to recognize Hull's outstanding contributions and his dedication to duty. For almost 30 years Hull has given so much to so many. - Click here to read more...

Alaska: IFQ Record-keeping Rules to Change - On August 28, 2003 new regulations will revise certain record keeping and reporting requirements for the Individual Fishing Quota (IFQ) Program for fixed gear Pacific halibut and sablefish fisheries and the Western Alaska Community Development Quota (CDQ) Program for the Pacific halibut fishery in Alaska. --- "The changes will streamline the record keeping process for fishermen while it helps us more efficiently administer the program," said Jeff Passer, Special Agent in Charge for the Alaska Region of NOAA Fisheries. POW - Prince of Wales Federal Lands Closed Aug. 1-21 For Those Not Qualified As Subsistence Hunters - The federal subsistence hunting season for deer in Alaska's Game Management Unit 2 opened July 24, 2003, and runs through Dec. 31. Hunting is closed on federal public lands on the island from Aug. 1 to 21 to people who are not federally-qualified subsistence users. A person must be a rural Alaska resident to harvest fish and wildlife under federal subsistence regulations. - Click here to read more...

Alaska: AK & US Department of Labor TAA Programs To Hold Public Hearings Concerning Economic Downturn In Fishing Industry - The Alaska Department of Labor in conjunction with the US Department of Labor will hold public hearings in Cordova, Kodiak and Juneau to take comments on issues concerning the economic downturn in the fishing industry due to competition from farmed salmon.
