Ketchikan: 'Esperanza
Arrives' - The Esperanza was photographed Tuesday afternoon
anchored west of Peninsula Point at approximately mile 5 North
Tongass Highway. The Esperanza which is the latest and largest
vessel in Greenpeace's fleet arrived in Ketchikan on Monday.

Hires New Staff & Transfers Senior Employees - Ketchikan
Indian Community General Manager, Georgianna Zimmerle, announced
Monday the hire of two new senior managers. John S. Brown resigned
his seat on the Tribal Council Friday to accept the position
of Housing Director that was left vacant when Zimmerle was promoted
to General Manager on June 10. Lance K. Mertz joined KIC in the
position of Finance Director a week ago when he left his position
as Business Manager for the Ketchikan International Airport.
Donna Frank, who has been with KIC for four years and as Controller
for the past year, is taking on the responsibility of Business
Planner and Enterprise Development Director of KIC's economic

Conducting Community-Wide Child Find - The Ketchikan Gateway
Borough School District is currently conducting a community-wide
Child Find for children ages 3-21 who may be eligible for free
special education services.
Quoting the Ketchikan School District's child-find announcement,
Special Education covers a wide range of disability categories
under which students may qualify for additional services in the
school setting. They include learning disabled, emotionally disturbed,
other health impaired, hard of hearing, deaf/blind, deaf, orthopedically
impaired, speech impaired, preschool disabled, autism, vision
impaired, traumatic brain injury, mental retardation, and multiply

Alaska: Governor
Again Turns Down Foreign Processors - For the second time
this year, Gov. Frank H. Murkowski has determined that it is
not in Alaska's best interest to allow Russian processors to
come into state waters at Prince William Sound to purchase pink
salmon.
In turning down a request last
Friday from Smokie Foods to issue an Inland Waters Permit to
the foreign processor, Murkowski noted that state Fish &
Game biologists have reported that it is unlikely that a significant
surplus of pinks will be produced that domestic processors won't

Negotiating With Potential Buyer for Williams Refinery -
In a Monday morning press conference in Fairbanks, Governor
Frank H. Murkowski announced that the State of Alaska is entering
into negotiations with the potential buyer of state royalty oil
for use at the Williams refinery in North Pole. The refinery
is on the market, but buyers need to be assured of a steady supply
