Ketchikan: Senator Robin Taylor Resigns Senate Seat To Accept New Position - Speaking to a crowd of approximately 40 people at the Ted Ferry Civic Center Friday morning, Sen. Robin Taylor announced that he would be resigning his senate seat and accepting a position with Governor Murkowski. Ketchikan: Governor Signs Bill Naming New State Ferry "Lituya"; Ferry Named By Josiah Milne of Metlakatla - One of the three bill signed into law today in Ketchikan by Governor Frank Murkowski named the new state ferry the "Lituya."

The bill, SB 223 naming the new state ferry "Lituya", was introduced at the request of Lt. Governor Loren Leman, as the conclusion of a contest held among grade school students to name the new ferry. Josiah Milne of Metlakatla wrote the winning essay naming the Lituya. - Click here to read more...

Alaska: Kachemak Bay East Closed To Mussel Harvest; Closure due to paralytic shellfish poison - A commercial shellfish harvesting area in Kachemak Bay, known as "Kachemak Bay East" was closed today to commercial mussel harvesting by the Department of Environmental Conservation because of high levels of paralytic shellfish poison (PSP) found in a sample from the area.

According to Mike Ostasz, DEC's shellfish program manager, individuals are advised not to harvest or eat mussels from this area because of the unacceptable level of PSP. - Click here to read more...
