June Allen Column: Memories
of a Lifetime in Ketchikan; A story about Ralph M. Bartholomew
- There are two kinds of history. There's the kind we had to
study in school that consisted primarily of names, dates, battles,
and famous people - facts we had to remember at least long enough
to take exams. And then there's the other kind of history, in
which someone who "lived it" tells the tales of his
or her years, stories woven with authenticity, humor, color and
the sights and sounds of pleasant memories - stories that stay
with us. - Click

Department of Education Releases Statewide School Performance
Status - Three of Ten Ketchikan Schools Listed As Meeting Adequate
Yearly Progress (AYP) - For the first time in the history
of our state and nation, the Alaska public now will have the
necessary information about the performance of their public schools
that can be used to make significant strides in school and student
performance.
Alaska Education Commissioner
Roger Sampson today released a preliminary list of 283 schools
statewide that did not meet all the Adequate Yearly Progress
(AYP) targets of the federal No Child Left Behind Act, the most
sweeping school reform legislation in our nation's history. There
are a total of 488 Alaska public schools included in the Alaska
Department of Education's Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) calculations.
The information released today by the Alaska Department of Education
is based on Alaska student performance standards and student
assessments in reading, writing and math. - Click

NW & Alaska: Threatened
juvenile salmon get scientific assistance - Research has
found that thousands of miles of essential juvenile salmon habitat
are blocked by tens of thousands of culverts that lay beneath
Pacific Northwest roadways. Many of these culverts - that for
years have successfully channeled water under roadbeds - are
acting as barriers to young salmon preventing them the upstream
passage required for growth and development. - Click
