Congressional Pay Raise: What Deficit? Congress Finds Money for Pay Raise, Says Council for Citizens Against Government Waste - The Council for Citizens Against Government Waste (CCAGW) denounced the House of Representatives for Thursday's action increasing the salary of members of Congress by $3,400 to a total of $158,103 per year. Congress amended the law in 1989 to allow for automatic "cost of living" increases every year, unless there is a specific vote to cancel it. Fiscal 2004 will make five years in a row that Congress refused to turn down its pay hike. - Read more...

photosKetchikan: Empress of the North - The first stern-wheeler to cruise Southeast Alaska's Inside Passage in more than a century made its debut passage through Ketchikan last month on its way to Juneau. The ship's second sailing was scheduled to leave Seattle on August 31st and the stern-wheeler was again seen docked in Ketchikan Friday.

The ship's 12-day journey from Seattle to Juneau, or 11-day journey from Juneau to Seattle, starts at $3,500 per person and includes shore excursions at each of the trip's nine ports - with Ketchikan one of the ports. - Read more...

Alaska: Progress Reported on Alaska Peninsula Oil & Gas Exploration Efforts - According to the Office of the Governor, the Murkowski administration is making good progress on oil and gas leasing issues in the Alaska Peninsula/Bristol Bay region. "The co-operation we have seen between state agencies and the interested groups from the Alaska Peninsula is an excellent example of how the Governor's policy for rural economic development is intended to work," said Murkowski Chief of Staff Jim Clark. photosKetchikan: High Adventures For Ketchikan Scout Troop 4 - Fifteen boys from Ketchikan Boy Scout Troop 4 flew to Anchorage on July 13 to attend Camp Gorsuch, located in Chugiak, Alaska. The weather was hot and dusty so swimming in the lake was everyone's priority.
