Profile America: Monday, September 29th. Today is the
anniversary of an organization that is 104 years old, but as
modern as today's dangerous world. The Veterans of Foreign Wars
- known simply as the VFW - was founded in 1899 in Kansas City,
Missouri. Those who served in the Spanish-American War became
its first members, joined over the years by veterans of World
Wars I and II, Korea, Vietnam and the Gulf War. Future members
will come from the ranks of those serving in Afghanistan and
Iraq. Membership is open only to those who have earned an Overseas
Campaign Medal - currently, there are about 2-million members.
The total number of veterans in the U.S. today is just over 25-million.
