Ranger selected as National Tribal Relations director - A
long-time Forest Service employee and native of Alaska is leaving
remote island life to toil "inside the beltway."
Dale Kanen, Craig District
Ranger, has accepted the director position for the Office of
Tribal Relations in the National Forest Service's Washington
D.C. office. In his new position, Kanen will oversee the Forest

Alaska: $14.5
Million Released for Alaska Native Education Programs - The
Department of Education has informed Senator Ted Stevens that
several Alaskan groups and schools will benefit from $14.5 million
he secured to implement the Alaska Native Education Equity Act
according to a news release. The funding was part of the Fiscal
Year 2003 Labor and Health and Human Services Appropriations
bill, which also funds the Department of Education. - Read

Awards 3 Exploration Licenses in Susitna Valley - Governor
Frank Murkowski announced Monday that following completion of
the public comment period and evaluation of input received, the
state has awarded three exploration licenses in the Susitna Valley
two to Forest Oil Corporation and one to Clearflame Resources
LLC, of Denver, Colorado. All three licenses are located west
of the Parks Highway. Forest Oil's two licenses cover 857,681
acres and require a total work commitment of $5.52 million. Clearflame's
license covers 475,584 acres and requires a work commitment of
$2.5 million. All three licenses have a primary term of seven
