Ketchikan: Blaze
causes substantial damage to downtown home - What has been
called a stubborn blaze caused substantial damage Sunday to a
three-story house located above the downtown tunnel at 411 Front
Street. According to information provided by David Hull of the Ketchikan
Fire Department, the fire was difficult to fight due to the construction
and the age of the building. Firefighters were eventually pulled
off the structure when smoke and fire conditions along with increasing
instability of the structure itself made interior operations
too dangerous for the firefighters. - More...

Alaska: Fairweather
Will Need New Engine - The fast vehicle ferry M/V Fairweather
which began service in May 2004 will need a replacement engine.
As a result of being able to operate on only three of four engines,
the Fairweather's schedule to Sitka and Skagway will be highly
dependent on tides and winds.
"The engine manufacturer
is currently searching for a new engine to replace the number
one engine, which has been damaged by loose parts caused during
assembly," said Captain John Falvey, General Manager of
the Alaska Marine Highway System. "Our hope is that the
engine will be located and available for installing when the
Fairweather is in for scheduled maintenance in mid-October."

Howard
Dean: Labor
Day - On Labor Day, Americans ought to consider the struggles
of the average worker in this country. It has not been easy to
survive the current economic climate - wages have not kept pace
with even the modest inflation we have had over the past few
years. Those earning minimum wage have seen living standards
virtually collapse in the last 30 years. There are many more
working Americans who have lost all or most of their benefits,
including health insurance. And, there are one million more Americans
out of work then there were four years ago. - More...

Harold
Gillam: A Tragic Final Flight; Ketchikan remembers the search
- Harold Gillam was among the boldest of those gutsy pioneer
bush pilots who painted Alaska's early aviation history on an
enormous canvas of rugged and unforgiving wilderness often cradled
in the foulest, most extreme weather on the planet.
Oldtime pilots said that there
were three kinds of Alaska weather: clear and unlimited, called
Pan Am weather; then ordinary weather, and lastly, there was
"Gillam weather." While more prudent pilots sat out
the worst days, the quiet-loner Gillam would shake his head and
say, "The weather's never as bad as it looks." - Read
