photosAlaska: Governor Announces "Bring the Kids Home" Initiative; Proposal will allow Alaskan children in out-of-state residential care to receive care in-state - Governor Frank H. Murkowski announced a proposed initiative to "Bring the Kids Home" during a speech on Thursday before the Alaska Federation of Natives.

The new initiative to return children from behavioral health care in out-of-state residential facilities to in-state or community-based care facilities will be part of the Fiscal 2006 budget request made to the Legislature, Governor Murkowski said. It is expected to cost $5 million but result in better service for the children, bringing them closer to home to keep their families more involved in their care. It will also allow the state to reinvest funds with in-state facilities and allow for more effective transitions and discharges. - More...

Alaska: Stocks dampen first quarter return - The Alaska Permanent Fund returned 0.61% for the first quarter of fiscal 2005, an approximately 2.5% annualized return. "This quarter's performance continues the trend that began in the final quarter of the last fiscal year," said Michael J. Burns, Executive Director/CEO of APFC. "While last year's 14.2% return was very strong, performance had definitely slowed by the end of the fiscal year. We knew when the rally in the stock market began at the end of fiscal 2003 that it would probably level out eventually as the market corrected." - More...

photosThe State Capitol and Its Marble and keeping the capital in Juneau - A recent news item in the Anchorage daily paper mentioned that a group of Juneau boosters, chaired by Mayor Bruce Botelho, hope to build a new Alaska Capitol building to be leased to the state at completion. They call themselves the Capitol Planning Commission and expect to announce a nationwide design competition in November. A new Capitol building would replace Juneau's present six-story Art Deco treasure. The old six-story building, its imposing façade featuring four gracious marble columns quarried in Southeastern Alaska, is a stately structure matching the grandeur of the setting that is home to picturesque downtown Juneau. - Read the rest of this story by June Allen...
