Ketchikan: Kanayama...
Ketchikan's Sister City by Daniel Patton - In 1986, through
the work of many forward-thinking politicians and educators on
both sides of the Pacific, Ketchikan and Kanayama, Japan began
a sister city relationship. Since then, over 500 middle school students,
36 teachers, several political delegations and cultural emissaries
(Alaska Native dancers, Japanese Taiko drummers, Japanese flower
arrangers) have made the 9,000 mile journey across the North
Pacific to participate in cultural and educational enrichment.
This remarkably successful sister city arrangement is one of
the longest running Japanese-American exchange programs in either

Vaccination Exercise A Success - By 9:30 a.m. on October
30 a line was forming in the cold and wind outside the doors
of the Kodiak High School auditorium. When the doors were opened
at 10:00 a.m. a steady stream of people flowed through the auditorium.
Some received flu shots, some only a smile and a "thank
you." All left knowing they had helped Kodiak prepare for

Guard boat crew rescues the rescuer - A Coast Guard
boat crew provided a tow for a fishing vessel whose captain rescued
two men from the water two miles south of Bold Island in Southeast
Alaska Sunday.
The Coast Guard received a
call at about 3:30 p.m. from a crewmember aboard the fishing
vessel Blue Fin who reported his boat capsized. Sam Elliott
and Don Munhoven Jr. of Ketchikan, equipped with life vests,
clung to the overturned vessel while waiting for assistance.
The Coast Guard issued an Urgent Marine Information Broadcast
(UMIB) and launched an Air Station Sitka Jayhawk helicopter crew
and a Station Ketchikan 47-foot motor life boat crew to the scene.
