Ketchikan: Cooking and Fire Safety - The kitchen is a very busy place is very busy during the holiday season. Because of all the excitement with family, cooking, and celebration, it’s important we recognize the potential for increased fire risks.
According to information provided by the Ketchikan Fire Department, in 2008, firefighters nationwide responded to more than 1,300 cooking-related house fires during the Thanksgiving holiday. These fires resulted in more than 400 needless deaths.
One of the biggest problems is people using deep fat fryers to cook their turkeys during the holidays. “People often don't know how to use them properly and they don't read the directions. When an accident happens, they are not prepared. They put their property, themselves, and their guests or family at risk. One of the problems seen nationally is people will drop the turkey in the extremely hot oil not realizing there's ice and water inside the turkey. This can cause a very violent steam explosion (boil-over), sending extremely hot oil out of the pot. This can cause serious burn injuries and/or fire.”

Alaska: Final Designation of Polar Bear Critical Habitat Announced; Governor Vows to Fight Habitat Designation - The Department of the Interior’s U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service on Wednesday designated more than 187,000 square miles of on-shore barrier islands, denning areas and offshore sea-ice as critical habitat for the threatened polar bear under the Endangered Species Act.

The designation identifies geographic areas containing features considered essential for the conservation of the bear that require special management or protection.
“This critical habitat designation enables us to work with federal partners to ensure their actions within its boundaries do not harm polar bear populations,” said Tom Strickland, Assistant Secretary for Fish and Wildlife and Parks. “Nevertheless, the greatest threat to the polar bear is the melting of its sea ice habitat caused by human-induced climate change. We will continue to work toward comprehensive strategies for the long-term survival of this iconic species.”
Alaska Governor Sean Parnell expressed disappointment Wednesday that the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service designated more than 187,000 square miles in Alaska as critical habitat for polar bears, a decision subjecting the vast area to consultations regarding potential human activities within its boundaries.
“Such consultations are increasingly being misused to challenge responsible resource development,” Governor Parnell said. “This additional layer of regulatory burden will not only slow job creation and economic growth here and for our nation, but will also slow oil and gas exploration efforts," said Parnell.
Parnell said, “While the state is pleased that the final designation exempted existing U.S. Air Force installations, the communities of Barrow and Kaktovik, and manmade structures from critical habitat, we are disappointed that the State of Alaska was not consulted on its numerous other recommendations and comments submitted to the service. We are especially concerned regarding the limited consideration given to the additional economic information the state provided.”
The State of Alaska maintains the designation was not supported by sound science or good economic analysis. The state is considering its options, including a possible legal challenge to the designation.
According to a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service press release, the designation of critical habitat under the ESA does not affect land ownership or establish a refuge, wilderness, reserve, preserve, or other conservation area. It does not allow government or the public access to private lands. A critical habitat designation does not affect private lands unless federal funds, permits, or activities are involved. - More...

Technology: Smishing and Vishing And Other Cyber Scams to Watch Out For This Holiday - You receive a text message or an automated phone call on your cell phone saying there’s a problem with your bank account. You’re given a phone number to call or a website to log into and asked to provide personal identifiable information—like a bank account number, PIN, or credit card number—to fix the problem.
But beware: It could be a “smishing” or “vishing” scam…and criminals on the other end of the phone or website could be attempting to collect your personal information in order to help themselves to your money. While most cyber scams target your computer, smishing and vishing scams target your mobile phone, and they’re becoming a growing threat as a growing number of Americans own mobile phones. (Vishing scams also target land-line phones.)
“Smishing”—a combination of SMS texting and phishing—and “Vishing”—voice and phishing—are two of the scams the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) is warning consumers about as we head into the holiday shopping season. These scams are also a reminder that cyber crimes aren’t just for computers anymore.
Here’s how smishing and vishing scams work: criminals set up an automated dialing system to text or call people in a particular region or area code (or sometimes they use stolen customer phone numbers from banks or credit unions). The victims receive messages like: “There’s a problem with your account,” or “Your ATM card needs to be reactivated,” and are directed to a phone number or website asking for personal information. Armed with that information, criminals can steal from victims’ bank accounts, charge purchases on their charge cards, create a phony ATM card, etc.
Sometimes, if a victim logs onto one of the phony websites with a smartphone, they could also end up downloading malicious software that could give criminals access to anything on the phone. With the growth of mobile banking and the ability to conduct financial transactions online, smishing and vishing attacks may become even more attractive and lucrative for cyber criminals.
Here are a couple of recent smishing case examples: - More...

Ward Cove Deja 'Vu By
Mary Lynne Dahl - Once again, Ward Cove is the subject of a questionable purchase by a buyer who has already demonstrated that he either does not have or is not able to raise the money that he offers. He also refuses to disclose, does not keep his word and may, in fact, be just another flim-flam man looking at Ketchikan as an easy mark for his own enrichment plans. A Seattle area man, Kenneth Hopen of Hopen & Associates, a Nevada limited liability corporation, has come up with an offer that has, so far, not put a dime on the table. - More...

RE: Herring By
Kevin Kristovich - This letter is in response to the comments and concerns made by Lawrence,"Snapper" Carson. For years now, I have been reading about Mr. Carson commenting about the local herring population and how he accuses the Department of Fish and Game for mismanaging the local herring stocks we once had in the Kah Shakes area south of Ketchikan. He also goes on to object to the West Behm Canal area that is designated as a commercial sac roe herring fishery area. - More...

Kevin Kristovich - To all Ketchikan commercial fishermen and local harbor users. Profiling has its place. By
A. M. Johnson - As it relates to our current National airport TSA situation... "Once upon a time in the early days of our Western Territory development, a young Eastern newspaper reporter ventured west to witness and report on daily events. Stepping down from the stagecoach in a Western town, he witnessed the crowd gathering around a newly constructed gallows. Inquiring, he found that there was to be a hanging of a young horse thief. Horrified, he witnessed this act and was distraught. Several days following the hanging, it was discovered that the wrong man had been hung. - More...

Miller needs to let go By
LeAnn Pickard - Am I the only person who is rather shocked by the way Miller is handling the outcome of the votes? He seeks to challenge misspellings of Murkowski's name, regardless of voter intent, and is now planning on calling for a recount because there were volunteer observers who did not have the training needed and therefore some ballots that should have been challenged were not. The math says that even if he gets all the 8,000+ ballots taken out of the equation, Murkowski is still in the lead by a couple thousand votes. - More...

RE: Iranian Nuclear Weapons Threat By
Adam Price - Mr. Donald Moskowitz’s letter (Iranian Nuclear Weapons Threat, 11/9/10) basically said it’s time to use force against Iran in an effort to stop their nuclear program. The letter states that a number of countries have nuclear weapons, but are considered “stable” and they behave with “rational conduct.” Umm…let’s see, which country is the only one in history to drop not one, but two atomic bombs? - More...
