Alaska: Fairweather
Damaged by Rogue Wave in Lynn Canal - The Alaska Marine Highway
System's fast vehicle ferry, M/V Fairweather, is out of service
for repairs to damage sustained Thursday afternoon when the vessel
was hit by a rogue wave in Lynn Canal. The Fairweather was returning
from Haines to Juneau on its regularly-scheduled route when the
wave hit around 4 p.m. AMHS officials estimate the repairs, which
must be US Coast Guard approved, will take two weeks to accomplish.
There were no injuries to passengers, and the Fairweather proceeded
on to its berth at Auke Bay. - More...

says Anchoarge Daily News displays the wrong kind of restraint
- Regarding the announcement that three major producers had proposed
building a natural gas pipeline, Murkowski said, "This issue
is so important to Alaskans and the future of our state. To have
the state's largest newspaper bury it on the Money section is
unconscionable," Murkowski said. "I'm thinking about
buying a parakeet so that the Anchorage Daily News can finally

Russell, 13, selected as UFA 2004 Fisherman of the Year -
United Fishermen of Alaska (UFA) has selected thirteen year old
Jess Russell of Clam Gulch as its first annual Fisherman of the
Year. The UFA Board congratulated Jess for his outstanding actions
and the sound basis of preparedness that enabled him to make
the vital difference in a life and death fishing mishap on the
